1. The Screaming Sword
The fireplace flames billowed up to form the outline of a man—a man made of fire. “Who uses Sokhal’s Star to call me?” The mage’s voice reached every corner of the hall. Beneath the broken furniture, Kenrad lay motionless. If he stood up, the man with the screaming sword would know that he still lived. But when the Warlock of Miron asks a question, he expects an answer. “It’s Kenrad, Uncle Stefan.” His youthful voice cracked. “And that man killed Mother.”

2. Sokhal’s Star
Kenrad held the pendant in his clasped hands. Sokhal’s Star flickered then began to glow brighter and brighter; light streamed out from between his fingers. Magic! The likes of which Blumgar had never seen. Kenrad’s hands were ablaze, burning with a light so strong it hurt the eyes. Suddenly the night was lit by a burst of lightning, as if the sun had exploded. The attackers broke their silence with screams of agony that quickly died away. In the eerie quiet that followed, Blumgar stared at the hairs on his forearm. They were shriveled by the heat, like those of a blacksmith.

3. The Scattered Winds
Sokhal’s Star glowed in Kenrad’s hand as he held the pendant up.
“Come on, Kenrad.” Blumgar muttered aloud. “Time to fall back, lad.”
“What’s he waiting for?” Merkyn looked back at the Erramic archers spread out among the Hiagh wagons. “If he doesn’t get out of the way, he’s going to get shot!”

The light of Sokhal’s Star went out. Kenrad staggered, sinking to his knees. As he fell, Pratha left his side and glided down the slope, muscles rippling under her fur. With an angry roar the Sand Cat made her presence known.

“Kenrad!” Blumgar lunged forward with Merkyn right behind. Heedlessly they charged down the slope. Kenrad was lurching back to his feet. Pratha had the lead pirate by the throat. As they struggled on the ground, turning and twisting, the second pirate ran up screaming and bellowing. Sword in hand, he loomed over the writhing bodies of man and cat. The pendant in Kenrad’s hand spat out a tongue of light and the pirate burst into flame. His screams silenced everything else.
