Overview: Of all the rotten luck! Percy Fitzwilliam, second son of the Earl of Basingstoke and newly promoted Colonel, needs to marry for money in order to maintain his life of pampered privilege. Unfortunately, Napoleon’s plans to invade England interrupt his search. Percy is called into service, and after an unfortunate incident in Dover he is sent to Placentia, Newfoundland. A ramshackle fishing village, dismal and full of mud – how could he hope to find a wealthy bride here? Or any woman for that matter; the only single woman he has seen is an American of small fortune (although she does remind him of a certain Miss Bennett).
Rosemond Kelly wishes to follow in her father’s footsteps and study medicine. They’ve come to Newfoundland, a land of rugged beauty and opportunity, to treat the native tribes and Irish fishermen. Single men are everywhere, but why would she ruin her plans by marrying, especially to a pampered peacock that never worked a day in his life (even if he is a bit handsome)? Can a promise of friendship grow into something more? And what dangers could threaten their feelings for each other?
Fans of Jane Austen will love the continuing adventures of Colonel Fitzwilliam, set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic war and the birth of a new nation!
