Overview: The Game’s Afoot . . .
"The appearance of another volume of reminiscences of my old friend Solar Pons calls, perhaps, for some explanation. It has been on my conscience that a number of uncollected cases of the one whom the late Sultan of Turkey was pleased to describe as ‘The Prince of Detectives’ have been lying gathering dust in my files.
"The work of retrieving these, deciphering the rough notes, and putting them into order for publication has taken a considerable time, but I trust those many admirers of Solar Pons will not be disappointed in the results. As a concession to popular request, I have selected only those reminiscences of a longer nature which reveal my friend’s preeminent gifts and which occasionally highlight the more humorous facets of his character.
"The greater length of these cases has enabled me to indulge the reader in the matter of setting, milieu, and atmosphere. The result in The Dossier of Solar Pons will, I trust, enable those enthusiasts for the work of the great detective to revel once again in the thrill of the chase.
"It is time now to begin. The game’s afoot!"
—LYNDON PARKER, M.D.

Readers who have exhausted the Sherlockian cannon and the various modern pastiches of the Master, might well be advised to investigate the strange cases of Solar Pons. Mr. Pons was created nearly seventy years ago by Wisconsin-born writer, August Derleth — who paid Doyle the courtesy of cloning the great detective. Names and biographical details were changed, and the setting was moved from the Victorian period to the 1920’s. Mr. Copper was then authorized by Arkham House, Inc. to continue the series in a series of paperback originals. While maintaining the sly mixture of pastiche and homage to its creator, Copper brought his own voice and a sure sense of place and period detail to the series. Two previously unpublished collections from that series have been released by Fedogan & Bremer. A third book is planned for late 2000.

Solar Pons 14 The Recollections of Solar Pons
Illustrated by Stefanie K.Hawks.
Contents:
"The Adventure of the Cursed Curator"
"The Adventure of the Hound of Hell"
"The Adventure of the Mad Millionaire"
"The Adventure of the Singular Sandwich"
British writer Copper (The Exploits of Solar Pons) effectively captures the style of Sherlock Holmes tales in four novellas narrated by Dr. Lyndon Parker, who plays Watson to consulting detective Solar Pons in 1920s London. "The Adventure of the Mad Millionaire" requires Pons to discover if the cause of a financier’s peculiar behavior is, in fact, all in his head, while "The Adventure of the Cursed Curator" calls upon him to find out why an Egyptologist has had a mummy peering at him through his office bookcase. In "The Adventure of the Hound of Hell," Pons must puzzle out why two sets of footprints enter-but none leave-the woodshed in which a rich but miserly and miserable old woman was murdered, and he tackles a locked-room mystery in "The Adventure of the Singular Sandwich." The atmosphere is always first rate, but the puzzles are not elusive enough: readers will catch on to many of the tricks well before Parker. The moment this happens, Pons seems blessed less with genius than with irritating smugness, and the stories diminish in appeal.

Solar Pons 16 The New Adventures of Solar Pons: Tales of the Sherlock Holmes of Praed Street David Marcum (ed)
In the 1920’s, college student August Derleth wrote to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, asking if any more Sherlock Holmes adventures were going to be published. Upon receiving a negative reply, Derleth decided to provide some of his own. However, rather than relating more tales of Holmes and Dr. Watson, he ended up introducing the world to Solar Pons and Dr. Lyndon Parker, living in London during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Pons solved crimes using deduction and ratiocination, often referring to Holmes as “The Master” or “My illustrious predecessor”. Since his first appearance, Pons has been a favorite with Sherlockians. Now, for the first time ever, the estate of August Derleth has authorized the first ever anthology of Solar Pons stories! These twenty new adventures range from soon after Pons and Parker met in 1919 to a story that occurs after Germany has been defeated in World War II. Each of them fully and traditionally falls within the Pontine Canon. The authors of these stories have contributed their royalties to the Jan Stauber Grant Fund for the Beacon Society, which provides scholarships to educators, schools, and Sherlockian Scion societies, allowing them to purchase Sherlock Holmes books and materials in order to introduce young people to The Canon.Join us again at 7B Praed Street where The Game is Afoot!

Solar Pons 17 The Papers of Solar Pons: New Adventures of the Sherlock Holmes of Praed Street David Marcum (ed)
Solar Pons was created by August Derleth in the 1920s as a continuation of the Sherlock Holmes canon. Derleth, who famously created Arkham House Publishing to preserve the writings of his friend, author HP Lovecraft, had corresponded with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, asking whether Doyle would be providing any new Holmes adventures. When Doyle said no, Derleth determined to write some himself. However, instead of writing more Holmes tales, Derleth came up with Solar Pons, a detective very similar to Holmes, and Dr. Lyndon Parker, his Dr. Watson. Eventually, between the 1920’s and his death in 1971, Derleth wrote over seventy Pons tales, set in that period between the end of World War I and 1939.
“Now, meet Solar Pons, the Pride of Praed Street . . . The Master is not too visible – that is, to the naked eye. But you will feel his dynamic presence once again . . . Yes, dear reader, but turn a page, and again – the game is afoot!” – Ellery Queen
Bestselling Sherlock Holmes author David Marcum continues The Pontine Canon with twelve new Pons adventures:
• The Adventure of the Doctor’s Box
• The Park Lane Solution
• The Poe Problem
• The Singular Affair of the Blue Girl
• The Plight of the American Driver
• The Adventure of the Blood Doctor
• The Additional Heirs
• The Horror of St. Anne’s Row
• The Adventure of the Failed Fellowship
• The Adventure of the Obrisset Snuffbox
• The Folio Matter
• The Affair of the Distasteful Society
Additionally, this volume contains a bonus Sherlock Holmes adventure, the author’s Solar Pons origin story, “The Adventure of the Other Brother”, forewords from noted Ponsians, and Appendices. Join us at 7B Praed Street, where Solar Pons and Dr. Parker are about to begin their next adventure. The game is afoot!
“[Solar Pons is] a clever impersonator, with a twinkle in his eye, which tells us that he knows that he is not Sherlock Holmes, and knows that we know it, but he hopes we will like him anyway for what he symbolizes . . . The best substitute for Sherlock Holmes known.” – Vincent Starrett
