Overview: Jerusha Jones lives in a small town in the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. When she grows up, she fully intends to be a feisty old lady. In the meantime, she regularly maxes out her library’s lending limit, has happily declared a truce with the clover in the lawn, but is fanatical about sealing up cracks in her old house, armed with a caulking gun. Due to the number of gaps she has yet to locate, however, she has also perfected her big spider shriek.

#1 – Sockeye County Shorts
What do you do when you’ve stolen a readily identifiable object worth millions? An item no pawnshop operator in his right mind would touch.

And the cops—county, state, feds, every agency with a terrifying three-letter acronym—are hot on your trail?

Ditch the goods, of course. Even if it’s arguable that you’re not too bright.

But where?

Ahh, indeed…

…and that’s still the question, thirty-seven years later.

Everybody knows where the pursuit dead-ended, but nobody’s found the treasure—yet. And most have given up.

Except one guy.

A conman of the most despicable character. A lowlife in every sense of the word, who forgot the difference between a truth and a fabrication a long time ago.

Time is running out. And his not-quite-ex wife is going to be just thrilled to see him. Not to mention Sheriff Marge Stettler, who banned him (unofficially—but very, very officially in all the ways that really matter) from her county for his many indiscretions.

…because the real question is, what risks do you have to take to retrace the last steps and muddled reasoning of an inept thief—the unpredictable yahoo who was a few nuggets short of a gold mine even in the best of circumstances?

#2 – Sockeye County Briefs
The middle of nowhere is often on the way from here to there. A thoroughfare, if you will. Nothing wrong with that.

Usually the people who live in the unassuming, odd-name towns along a bustling interstate highway are happy for the trade, the small influx of income, and they tolerate the gas-hog semitrucks and their drivers and the corporate entities who make all that commerce possible.

Until the most valuable form of commerce turns out to be nothing like the logos plastered on the sides of those trailers. Turns out the real money is in a secondary, parallel stream—a fresh wave of mind-altering drugs.

The hard stuff. The unregulated, experimental stuff that’s too pure and unpredictable. The stuff that vies with Russian roulette for turning vulnerable teenagers into instant corpses.

Undersheriff Ruby Falcone has seen this before, and it didn’t end well. But she survived that first encounter, and in her new adopted home of Sockeye County, she’s out to prove that she’s learned from her mistakes. She might have to team up with rancher Julian Joseph—a man with his own deep-seated regrets and extensive knowledge of the terrain—to do it.

But nobody who wears a badge—and none of the other concerned county residents—is going to rest until they find the ingeniously planned upstream source and the ruthless, well-connected mastermind behind it.

They might represent just a wide spot in the road, but Sockeye County doesn’t mess around when it comes to justice.

#3 – Sockeye County Au Naturel
The population of Sockeye County is growing, for all the best reasons—weddings and babies! But the other kind of influx is going on too. The singular kind of crazy that is tourist season.

While their leisure-spent money is certainly appreciated by the townsfolk, the thrill seekers bring a hard-charging, adrenaline-laced edge to everything they do, from buying supplies at Junction General to clogging the narrow shoulders of State Route 14 with their tricked-out crossover vehicles and boat trailers. Not much about this season is bucolic.

So when the body of an off-duty, out-of-area police officer is found along the railroad tracks, Sheriff Marge has an abundance of suspects. But the more she and her team investigate, the more they think the victim was hiding—not just from corrupt cohorts, but maybe from himself as well. Maybe from something even worse.

Sheriff Marge has more than enough to do just taking care of her own constituents. Will luring a knowledgeable killer out into the open stretch her and her deputies beyond the breaking point?

#4 – Sockeye County Skinny
Sockeye County sits smack dab in the middle of the scenic Columbia River Gorge. It’s a land full of history and natural resources.

And criminals, apparently. Or at least the criminally negligent.

When a mining truck loses its brakes and crashes down an embankment into the river along with its entire load, no one is more surprised than the controversial earth-moving contractor to find out there was an extra passenger.

An extra passenger who is too dead to answer questions.

But Sheriff Marge and her deputies have a lot of questions. And so does Meredith Sills, the curator of the Imogene Museum.

Because while the passenger wasn’t carrying his identification, he was carrying something that should’ve been placed in safekeeping in a museum at least a century ago.

#5 – Sockeye County Union
Washington and Oregon are neighbors. Friendly-like.

But Sheriff Marge isn’t too thrilled when Oregon’s criminal element overflows its border in the form of a chaotic car chase. Especially not when that chase results in a fiery crash and frantic manhunt that stretch the resources of her small department nearly beyond their limits.

Whoever said that not sticking your nose in your neighbor’s business is the best course of action was lying. Or completely removed from the realities of human interaction.

Because Sheriff Marge isn’t going to let this one rest. No matter the cost.

Although it could turn out to be a good thing that she has friends in low places.
