- And that’s what happened with me and Smoke. De Campi and Kordey have created a fascinating near-future setting, populated it with interesting characters and wrapped it around anall-too-believable and yet just exaggerated enough conspiracy plot to keep the reader engaged from start to finish. Score: 10/10

- Smoke is a British Farenheit 9/11 crossed with The Bourne Supremacy. Score: 10/10.

- It’s refreshing to hear from new voices in comics, especially when they sound as professional and talented as that of Alex de Campi, who really knocks one out of the park with Smoke.

- The thing with these stories is to allow the ridiculous elements to seep in without compromising the tension. Smoke pulls that off, and soit works. It helps, of course, that Kordey’s art can make even the mostunlikely world seem alive. Grade: A

- The first issue… has had unusually high reviews and repeated sellouts from stores as well as disproportionately high message board buzz. -this could well be the first breakout comic of the decade.
– James Groves, Comixfan.com
- Couple this return to peak form by Igor Kordey with a spectacular debutby Alex de Campi… and we have an introductory issue that excites me tothe extent that a Warren Ellis or Alan Moore penned tale would do so onthe same subject matter. It’s a fantastic debut issue, and acts as agreat pick-me-up from a market saturated by mediocrity and hype-ladenevents. Rating: 5/5.

- In a futuristic London run by a government both morally and financially bankrupt, an ex-soldier-turned-government-assassin must contend with a crisis in London, an unusual terrorist group, their even more unusual demands, and a vindictive ex-girlfriend, even as he tries to rebuild his own shattered life.
Rupert Cain walked away from his life as an honorable soldier three years ago when an explosion in a London bar killed most of his company. He abandoned his former life—and his girlfriend—to become the assassin Ajax. In a London of the future where England is bankrupt and the government’s agents have no one’s interests at heart but their own, Cain kills and doesn’t ask questions. But now his former commanding officer, who happens to be father to his ex, has been murdered and Cain must find out why. His journey leads him to a kidnapping of the head of OPEC by the Right to Beauty Brigade (all they want is money for plastic surgery) and an intrepid reporter who’s good at getting herself into the thick of things and not so good at getting herself out of them. De Campi and Kordey’s future is bitingly humorous, clearly inspired by the work of writers Warren Ellis and Grant Morrison, with Kordey’s art supplying a beautiful surface over the sordid details. Irony is thick on the ground, but so are interesting characters and a solid story. Going to hell in a hand basket with Cain is an entertaining ride.
Plot:
- Smoke #1. In a futuristic London run by a government both morally and financially bankrupt, an ex-soldier-turned-government-assassin must contend with a crisis in London, an unusual terrorist group and their even more unusual demands, and a vindictive ex-girlfriend, even as he tries to rebuild his own shattered life.
Smoke #2. When Cain’s former employers turn on him, it’s Once Upon a Time in the West Country as a team of heavies is dispatched to shut him up. As his allies evaporate one by one, Cain is increasingly beset by questions about just whose side his mentor was on. Unfortunately, the only person who can answer those questions is being held hostage by terrorists. As the government sees its plans unraveling, it calls in a little American help to remove the thorn in its side: No-Face, the deadly Yankee dandy.
Smoke #3. Abandoned by friends and ex-lovers, Cain is unwittingly used as a pawn by the government to track down his mentor’s reclusive, powerful associates. Cain’s only hope is to persuade Katie Shah, a journalist he betrayed, to help him. Caught between a desperate government and the mysterious Quiet Men, they race to uncover the ugly truths about Cain’s past and London’s present. But two steps behind slinks No-Face, borrowing a familiar identity and waiting for the right moment to end everything with a bang.
