Sleep, Divine and Human, in the Old Testament (Journal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement Series, 38) by Thomas H. McAlpine
Requirements: PDF Reader, 10,4 MB
Overview: The writers of the Old Testament, and those they wrote about, spent
approximately one third of their lives sleeping. But as this fact is
quite unremarkable, they did not remark on it. They, and those
studying their writings, were far more interested in time spent awake.
Thus sleep as a topic has received little attention. Nevertheless, there
is an intriguing set of issues here, some of which go beyond the
boundaries of this particular topic. As an introduction to these, I will
sketch out first the sorts of contexts in which sleep was remarkable,
survey the research that has been done up to this point, and describe
the focus of this study.
