My name is Emmi Basilides. I am an orphan living in the slums of Medio city. Every slumdog I know underestimates me. They think I am a dumb kid who could not survive alone, not without my brother, but I have been through so much, and I have never asked anyone to fight my battles. My mother abandoned me when I was five years old and here I am – about to reach the grand old age of sixteen. Believe me, anyone who can survive ten years in this place deserves respect.

The plague came and my best friend Lel died. It broke my heart, but I will not be beaten by this world. ‘Live for the moment’ is what Lel used to say, and I will move forward in her honour. I will prove to my brother I am not a kid any more, and I will show our rotten country that this dumb, blonde, ‘bottom-leveller’ is a force to be reckoned with.
Survivors of the Plague (#2)
My name is Emmi Basilides. I am the sister of a rebel soldier who is missing in action. The world of Eryx is falling apart. People are vanishing all around me. So many are dying. Some are simply leaving no trace, and the lack of closure is a real killer. I just want to flee this warzone, but you cannot run from a world war.
Everywhere I go, the violence follows me, and the scariest thing is how well I am adapting. I am supposed to be the carefree airhead, the one who depends on everyone else. Well, that is what the gang have always thought. The ironic thing is, when it comes to the crunch, time and again, they look to me. And I never wanted leadership, just like I never wanted conflict, but I am not being given a choice. Right now, life is about two things: running and waiting.
We keep running from battles, but in the process, we run into fresh battles. And all the while, we are waiting for my brother, my friends, and my boyfriend to safely return. I do not know if they ever will. I do not even know if hope is helpful any more. I am just trying to keep my sanity intact, but as the madness spreads around me, this damn plague, this bio-weapon is making things a million times worse.
