Overview: Gerald Verner, born John Robert Stuart Pringle on January 31, 1897, in Streatham, London, developed a love for reading and writing early on. Initially writing under the name Donald Stuart, he created 44 stories, which were for the Sexton Blake Library, and contributed to Union Jack and The Thriller, along with two stage plays and films. He used pen names like Thane Leslie, Derwent Steele, and Nigel Vane, and recycled magazine stories into novels, influenced by Edgar Wallace.
In the 1930s, Verner wrote for The Thriller and Detective Weekly, adeptly recycling his stories for book publication. His engaging style and adaptability earned him a special place in readers’ hearts, even leading to reprints of his works like ‘The Q Squad’ as recently as 2012. His storytelling was appreciated by many, including the Duke of Windsor, who owned a set of Verner’s thrillers.
Verner’s versatility also shone through in stage play adaptations, such as Peter Cheyney’s ‘The Urgent Hangman’ into the well regarded Agatha Christie’s ‘Towards Zero’ (1956) and ‘Meet Mr. Callaghan’ (1952).
His productive career continued until his passing on September 16, 1980, in Broadstairs, Kent, leaving a lasting legacy in thriller fiction.

Sorcerer’s House (#2)
Violent death—that is the message of Threshold House.
Events in the village of Ferncross have given the inhabitants good reason to respect the legend surrounding this sinister and derelict building—for, whenever a light appears in the window of the Long Room, they know from experience that a corpse will be found the next day.
Who is the mysterious killer, striking so suddenly and so wantonly?
For two years, the mystery has remained unsolved.
But Alan Boyce, a young American on holiday in Britain, is thoroughly enjoying his stay in Ferncross.
The village of Ferncross has everything he’d imagined, but when a light is seen in the window of the derelict manor, Alan decides to investigate and discovers the owner, Paul Meriton’s, corpse…
The police arrive and begin to investigate, but the queer story doesn’t avoid the attention of larger-than-life Simon Gale.
He senses a budding detective in Alan, and senses a pattern to the murder of Paul Meriton.
Something links this death with the murder of an unidentified man the last time that window lit up two years ago.
There are too many secrets in the village and one of them must explain the deaths at Threshold House.
With the help of Alan, Simon Gale intends to uncover them all…
The Snark was a Boojum (#3) finished by Chris Verner
What incredible fate had overtaken William Baker? The man had vanished – literally into thin air! He had walked out of his house at a quarter past nine and disappeared . . . but leaving behind his clothes, lying in a heap on the pavement . . .
The village police were completely baffled, and their unease increased when Baker’s nude dead body was later found, brutally stabbed in the back.
The case of William Baker was a mystery only one man could solve; it was once again down to the wiles of larger-than-life Simon Gale to uncover the seemingly impossible truth.
Through numerous vicissitudes and removals, the author’s son Christopher managed to hang on to the unfinished manuscript over the next 60 years. Chris Verner has finished his father’s novel, now presented in this new edition of a macabre masterpiece of detective fiction!
