Overview: Life in a rural area is different: people are less transient, providing a community memory that can stretch back hundreds of years; everybody knows everybody; and information spreads on the community grapevine with incredible speed. Everyone in this Virginia community knows that sparks fly when Dr. Zanie Wirth and Chip Parker, the Executive Director of ChesAtlantic Rural Health and Zanie’s boss, are together. Everyone knows Chip is inept, which he first demonstrates by producing a band-aid response to Zanie’s concern that someone tampered with the patients’ allergy shots. And everyone knows Chip likes to cop a feel.
As Zanie shares home remedies and medical tips with her medical student Megan and the patients, she becomes concerned when several patients try to confirm rumors that she is leaving the practice. One patient with a reliable source within ChesAtlantic warns that second-in-command Anna Easterly is working to get Zanie fired for unknown reasons, a move that would ruin Zanie’s career.
She and the staff successfully resuscitate a patient in anaphylactic shock from an allergy shot. But when Chip comes in for a severe asthma attack, he fails to respond to treatment, deteriorating into an unexpected cardiovascular collapse. Resuscitation efforts fail, leaving Zanie devastated and unable to understand what went wrong. Realizing she may be accused of murder, she refuses to sign a cause of death and refers the case to the medical examiner.
Zanie and her husband Steve, a self-employed consultant with frequent out-of-town meetings, discuss her gut feeling that perhaps Chip’s death was not accidental. She feels safe, though, in their home and ten-acre property situated between a wide creek and a huge tomato farm, protected by their yellow lab Sugar, the friendly farm workers nearby, and the surrounding overgrown woods. Piecing together information gleaned from her patients, student, and friends, she realizes too late who the murderer is and why, nearly costing her her life.
