Overview: Robert Shirley Richardson was born on April 22, 1902 in Kokomo, Indiana. He was an accomplished astronomer and wrote science fiction under the pseudonym, Philip Latham.
In his professional role, Richardson wrote about ten books on astronomy. His essay “Inside Out Matter” (December 1941 Astounding), as R.S. Richardson, contains the earliest known use of “contraterrene” to describe Antimatter.
As Philip Latham he wrote scripts for the early television series Captain Video as well as nineteen science-fiction stories. In one of these, “N Day” (Astounding Science Fiction, January 1946), an astronomer named Philip Latham is freed from his reclusive life by the knowledge that the sun is about to go nova. Latham wrote two Children’s SF novels: Five against Venus (1952) and Missing Men of Saturn (1953).
Robert Richardson died on November 12, 1981 in Altadena, California.
