Overview: Thomas (Tom) Barton, therapist, forensic psychiatrist, widower, and self-proclaimed smart ass comedian, aged 64, is on the verge of selling his practice of nearly forty years to his young associate, Dr. Gabriel (Gabe) Daniels, and moving to a quiet beach somewhere on the coast of South Carolina. But Barton’s plans are suddenly interrupted when Gabe gives him a ‘diary’ written by a patient, Jose Navarro, practically begging Barton for help in deciphering the horrific and cryptic writings.
The ‘diary’ turns out to be a collection of mismatched and dirty scraps of paper, held together inside a stained manila folder, bizarrely numbered sequentially. Many entries are written by obviously different hands, but driven by an obviously damaged, sometimes evil, mind.
Barton reluctantly agrees and in checking his patient records discovers that Navarro was previously a patient of the Richland County Mental Health Department where Sandra Davis is the day-shift manager. Sandra is somewhat of a surrogate daughter to Barton, and in the six years since his wife Abbey’s passing, a very important presence in his life.
From Sandra, Barton learns that Jose Navarro’s high school counselor, Judy Doddsen, might have been able to help him in deciphering the ‘diary’, had she not been grotesquely murdered several years before, by her husband, Dr. Taylor Strickland, who is serving a life sentence in a Richland County maximum security prison.
Barton then meets with Sergeant Cynthia Wainwright in an attempt to gain access to Dr. Strickland, but returns home to discover very fresh blood-stained evidence and that he might be targeted for murder. Almost immediately he then learns from his closest friend, Captain Detective Michael Deltonno and Sergeant Wainwright’s supervisor, that the home of his young partner, Gabe Daniels, has been defiled in a grotesque display of violence and blood.
While staying with Sandra Davis to avoid the crime scene that is his home, Barton is attacked and hospitalized, and Sandra is violently abducted in the midst of the worst killing spree the Richland County Sheriff’s Department has ever had to face.
Captain Deltonno, Sergeant Wainwright, and their team of investigators and Deputy Sheriffs, frantically search for the missing Sandra, trying to stop the unseen murderer, while Barton struggles to decipher the hidden meanings in the Shattered Diary.
