We highly recommend this book for several reasons: 1) it is hugely entertaining and, unlike many books on the subject, factual; 2) it is a well-researched book that deals straightforwardly with one of the most colorful times in the history of San Francisco; and 3) it shows what can be done with the plethora of information at the San Francisco Maritime Museum Library. Author Bill Pickelhaupt got the idea for this book while working there. He read an oral history of an old sailor who had been shanghaied and the idea took off. Latitude 38, December 1996.
