…I was chatting with Robert Heinlein the other day— oh, the other month it must have been— and I was interviewing him for Publisher’s Weekly, and I said, ‘Robert, how did you write your first science fiction story?’ And he said, ‘Thrilling Wonder was running a contest for the best story by an amateur and they were offering this fifty dollar prize, and so I wrote this story, but it ran 7000 words, and I had heard that a magazine called Astounding was paying a cent a word, so I submitted it to Astounding first, and they bought it.’ And I said to him, ‘Robert you son of a bitch, I won that contest and you beat me by $ 20.’
