Scimitar by Rick DeMarinis
Requirements: .PDF reader, 9.9 MB
Overview: Rick DeMarinis’s bizarre and delightful imagination will remind some readers of Kurt Vonnegut, others of Woody Allen, but he’s very much his own man. In Scimitar he creates a wildly funny vision of modem America touching on everything from the midlife sexual crisis to the obscene power of the military/industrial complex.
His hero, Arjay Ponce, is a typical suburban husband whose comfortable Southern California life has suddenly gone awry. Just when Dynablast, the aerospace plant he works for, is about to land Project Scimitar—the big gravy defense contract cofinanced by Arab oil money—Arjay fails to get the promotion he’s been in line for. To soothe his wounded ego, he dallies with a voluptuous neighbor, Lisa Dennison—a flirtation that leads (with disconcerting ease) to an orgiastic romp. Then Lisa is strangled, and all signs point to Arjay as the killer. The staid husband, the reluctant Don Juan, finds himself dubbed “The Panty-Hose Murderer” by the media, and forced to run for his life.
In his quest for the Veal murderer, Arjay keeps coming back to the mystery-enshrouded Scimitar and the people involved with it, especially to the enigmatic Skylor Blue, an internationally famous tycoon who makes Howard Hughes seem like a small businessman. In one of his most outrageous flights of fancy, Rick DeMarinis has created in Skylor Blue the ultimate technocrat, a man whose body has become an anachronism to him. And only our unlikely hero Arjay stands between Blue and the achievement of his dream: eternal life.
