Scholar Extraordinary: The Life of Friedrich Max Müller by Nirad C. Chaudhuri
Requirements: PDF Reader, 44 MB
Overview: This is Nirad Chaudhuri’s biography of Max Müller (1823-1900), one of Europe’s most famous Indologists and Sanskrit scholars. It was published by Chatto and Windus in 1974. Nirad Chaudhuri had begun living Oxford by the time he came to write this book and thus had full access to Müller’s papers, his descendants and the physical and intellectual environment in which Müller conducted his research.
Chaudhuri acknowledges as much when he writes, “I must set down my gratitude to Oxford, where I wrote the book. Of course, since the papers were in the Bodleian, I had to be here. But I did not work at Oxford only as a research student. I had to imbibe the spirit of the place where Max Müller spent his life, and the book would never have been what it is if only its materials were gathered at Oxford.”
At just under four hundred pages, this is a neat and tidy little book that shall appeal to all those interested in Nirad Chaudhuri, Max Müller, Sanskrit scholarship and Europe’s interactions with India through the ages.
