Sandy Reid series by Rod Hoisington (#1-#4)
Requirements: Epub reader/Mobi reader, 2.55 Mb
Overview: Rod Hoisington lives in Florida, where he devotes full-time to his compulsion to dig into the souls and lives of fictional characters. He has written this series of fast-paced mysteries with a splash of romance and in a compelling soft-boiled style that you’ll find enjoyable if you’re tired of the usual formula mysteries. Soft-boiled means it’s gritty, on the edge and at times risqué, and you can count on some murders being in there, but you don’t have to read about the gruesome details. The female protagonist, Sandy Reid, doesn’t carry a gun, but nevertheless isn’t intimated by bad guys. Bullets don’t bounce off her, but threats, assaults and insults invariably produce a toxic response. Why should men have all the fun?
Genre: Mystery, Crime
1. One Deadly Sister
When an almost-too-clever young law student in Philadelphia gets a life-or-death call from her estranged brother–she tells him to go to hell. She doesn’t need this. She’s holding an old grudge and resents having her life interrupted.
The brother doesn’t come looking for trouble, he simply wants to get past his Philadelphia divorce and start a new life in Florida, but woman-trouble comes looking for him. Unfortunately, he arrives in the small Florida ocean side town just as someone murders the local gubernatorial candidate. The brother doesn’t have a clue about women and gets seduced and framed. The brother hasn’t bothered with his estranged sister up north for years, but now as a stranger in a hostile town she’s his only hope.
She reluctantly decides to at least check out her brother’s predicament in Florida. This small step leads the sister into an ever-increasing entanglement of deceit, double-cross, and danger, and she must somehow persuade the irresistible investigating detective to play things her way.
2. The Price of Candy
When the irrepressible Sandy Reid learns the police have closed the case of an abused body found on the beach for lack of evidence, she feels compelled to discover the identity of the woman, expose what actually happened on that secluded beach that night, and find the perpetrator.
The almost-too-clever young law student must confront the prominent Congressman who gave the beautiful hitchhiker a ride to Florida and avoid becoming the second victim. She must unscramble a related child kidnapping that the mother won’t report, and clear herself of a murder charge that threatens to destroy her dream of becoming a lawyer.
Although she remains uptight and cozy with her irresistible detective lover, somewhere along the way she is tempted and discovers she has fallen victim to a sensuous passion of her own…
3. Such Wicked Friends
Sandy Reid stumbles over a potential client—shot between the eyes. She believes the murdered woman is asking her to find the killer. How else to explain the mysterious spot of blood Sandy later discovers on her own hand?
She begins a personal vendetta to find the killer. Her new law partner, Martin, joins in to help, and although he has a more intimate partnership in mind, he’s not the one she becomes interested in. In any case, she doesn’t intend to stray from her hunky detective lover–or does she?
Martin finds himself squeezed between two steamy seducers after a friend kills himself–or was it a second murder cleverly disguised as suicide? Now with two people dead, Sandy is certain that with all the deceiving and lusting going on, someone in the group of friends is guilty of murder.
4. Chasing Suspect Three
Sandy Reid is back and the assertive young criminal defense attorney finally lands her first big murder case. As she digs in and begins to destroy the state attorney’s case, she is convinced her client is lying. Is she rushing to save an innocent woman, or helping a killer get away with murder?
She faces a client who seems innocent of shooting her husband until she opens her mouth, the client’s mysterious boyfriend who has no past and is unquestionably shady yet doesn’t cast a shadow, and the victim’s sister whose fashionable façade hides a layer of predatory sex. The sister also happens to be a former girlfriend of Sandy’s lover and wants him back in her life. And they all have a reason to lie.
Sandy finds herself questioning her lover’s faithfulness at the same time she’s deciding whether to go too far with an FBI agent with movie-star looks who won’t take no for an answer. Her gutsy search for the killer leads her away from her quiet ocean side town and down to the tropical palms along Biscayne Bay, and the steamy streets of Miami that are dark with something more than the night.
In the end, Sandy discovers that not everything is as it seems. This fast-paced murder mystery is the fourth in the exciting mystery series with Sandy Reid the sassy and irrepressible protagonist.
