Overview: Bryce is a wildlife biologist for the state of California working in the Tahoe National Forest. He has been secluded in the woods for a whole month, tracking a pack of grey wolves that have migrated to California from the Sierra Nevada’s. One day, while tracking the pack of wolves through the forest, he stumbles upon a young buck picking away at the grass peacefully. Bryce, being a man that loves the outdoors and wildlife more than most others, watches the animal with a smile on his face. Suddenly, the buck is attacked by what can only be described as a feral and mutated version of a human. As Bryce watches the helpless animal get torn into by the vicious creature, his moral code gives him no choice but to shoot the human like thing and save the buck. Upon inspecting the mutant’s body, Bryce worries for his family and the world outside of the woods that he’s called home for weeks, remembering the horrific nightmare he had just the night before about one of his own family members becoming a deranged mutant as well. Knowing that this… thing, was not natural and must not be alone, Bryce sets off, leaving the woods and heading back into human society.
He finds the world has changed drastically as he leaves the woods, seeing the utter destruction that these mutant humans have caused to the world. Corpses line the sidewalks, being picked away at by the feral creatures. Homes are burnt to cinders, and cars are left abandoned, littering the streets. Raiders and theives take advantage of the chaos, robbing, murdering, and raping whoever they please.
On his quest to make it home to his family, Bryce will discover new friends and enemies along the way, banding together in a desperate hope for survival amidst the chaos of the new world. No matter how much Bryce hopes to keep his humanity and to find the ones he loves so that they can be a family again, he’ll find that this new world has darker and more sinister plans for his future.
With no hope of ever having a normal life again, Bryce and his fellow survivors decide to take sanctuary in the woods that he has come to know quite well. For awhile, they start to rebuild some semblance of peace, but when the infected and the cruel men and women of the world find them, they are forced to fight for everything they hold dear.
As members of their small community are murdered and others taken, Bryce finds that sometimes you must give in to the darker side of yourself in order to survive. Embracing the violence and rage inside of him might be the only way to save those he cares about, and get vengeance upon those who have tried to take everything from him. This new world is kill or be killed, and as it turns out, Bryce just might like the feeling of taking a life.
