# 1: Rusalka
A Rusalka–the spirit of a maiden drowned by accident or force–will return as a ghost to haunt the river and woods where she met her death. The locale for this fantasy by SF writer Cherryh (Downbelow Station ) is pre-Christian Russia. Two young men flee the village of Vojvoda–Pyetr, accused of killing a wealthy noble, and Sasha, an accessory to his escape. They are making their way to Kiev when, in the middle of a forest, they become involved in the search for the wizard Uulamets’s dead daughter Eveshka, a Rusalka and a wizard herself. Uulamets wants to resurrect her, but evil forces oppose him, among whom may be Kavi Chernevog, Uulamets’s former student, and a suspect in Eveshka’s death.
# 2: Chernevog
In this strong sequel to Rusalka, Cherryh continues her fantasy series based on ancient Russian folklore. During the hoary time of the book’s setting, wizards have power to influence events by wishing things to happen–but sometimes unlooked-for side effects occur. Here the former destructive rusalka (ghost) Eveshka, killed by the sorcerer Chernevog in the earlier volume and resurrected when her father sacrificed his life in her stead, is living with her husband Pyetr and the young wizard Sasha. Both Sasha and Eveshka worry about the power of their often unconscious wishes, concerned that their thoughts are being influenced by still-functioning wishes remaining in the atmosphere from a former time. When Eveshka suddenly leaves home without reason, Sasha and Pyetr feel sure someone has been wishing or magicking her, and set out in search of Chernevog.
# 3: Yvgenie
Rebellious teenage wizard Ilyana, suffocated by her overprotective mother, the wizard Eveshka, seeks instead the pleasant company of a mysterious, ghostly boy who appears in the woods. Ilyana’s father, Pyetr, an ordinary mortal, and her wizard uncle, Sasha, try fruitlessly to persuade Eveshka to give Ilyana a little leeway. So when handsome noble Yvgenie appears half drowned during a storm, just as an inexplicable fire burns down Sasha’s house, the wizards suspect the presence of Chernevog (another wizard, a former adversary, dead but still able to wreak harm, and the power behind the ghostly boy). Indeed, Chernevog takes Yvgenie over and proceeds to seduce Ilyana. Eveshka, returning hurriedly to the scene, warns against still other meddling dead wizards, and perhaps even the ancient elemental powers of the forest. Pyetr and Sasha, meanwhile, strive to protect Ilyana and restrain Eveshka’s rage.
