Overview: Willa and her younger brothers have been living with their father off the grid on the Alaskan wilderness, but with winter approaching and food supplies low, she resolves to take her brothers on a trip down the Yukon River to civilization and safety.
Twelve-year-old Willa and her younger brothers have lived in the wilderness with their father ever since their mother died, five years ago. They live in a log cabin they built and survive on food they grow and animals they hunt. Every year they have struggled a little bit more to survive until this year, with winter approaching and her father becoming more reckless, Willa wonders if they will live to see spring. She also knows her father will never agree to leave. When her father goes on a hunting expedition by himself, Willa convinces her brothers that they must make the treacherous four-day journey down the Yukon River to Fort Yukon to get help. Along the way, they encounter a bear protecting her cub, quicksand, running out of food—and have to worry that their father has returned home and is on their trail.
