Overview: “So…” Nicholas came up to the wagon. “What are you doing here, Anna? Where is Elias? I specifically asked that Elias be sent to America, not you.” Thirteen-year-old Anna had arrived at her father’s soddy home on the prairie of the Dakota Territory in the place of her older brother, Elias, who was seriously ill. Her father was more than disappointed. He was furious that his money had been spent to send his daughter to his homestead.
That rude reception led to Anna’s banishment to the home of Lucas and Emma, a couple with six children and a need for household help. For three years Anna toiled, unpaid, in that home. She lovingly cared for the six children and endured the drudgery of the unending labor placed upon her young shoulders by Lucas and Emma.
But Anna’s life began to change. There was a young man with white blond hair standing by the side of the church, as though waiting for someone when we arrived. Anna secretly examined him behind the brim of her bonnet. He was very handsome and muscular. That young man’s, Ollie’s, love and attention gave Anna courage to change her situation and her life.
Would Anna be able to overcome her untenable life situation? Would Ollie become crucial to her burning desire for independence? Would Anna be able to overcome the grinding anger her father, Nicholas, held toward her? Life in the Dakota Territory during the homesteading era was difficult. Change would be very challenging.
