09. The Chief Witness (1940)
Two brothers, one a successful accountant, the other a prominent solicitor commit suicide at exactly the same moment though they lived miles apart. A macabre coincidence? Perhaps, but Inspector Goff doesn’t necessarily believe in coincidences. Neither does Roger Bennion, who first proves that the deaths were murder, and then finds himself trying to prove the innocence of the nephew of one of the brothers, towards who all the evidence points. But can he, with no real clues and no other suspects discover who the real murderer is?

22. Exit the Skeleton (1952)
Exit the Skeleton by Herbert Adams is a spine-chilling mystery that will have you guessing until the very end. When a seemingly ordinary house becomes the scene of a gruesome murder, the local inspector is thrust into a web of dark secrets and buried pasts. As more skeletons—both literal and figurative—emerge, the race to uncover the truth intensifies. Each new clue leads to more questions, and the culprit could be anyone in this tightly-knit community. Will the inspector solve the mystery before the next victim is claimed, or will the killer continue to strike from the shadows? A must-read for fans of classic whodunits with a sinister twist.

25. The Judas Kiss (1955)
The Judas Kiss, first published in 1955, features detective Roger Bennion in a classic “golden-age” British mystery by Herbert Adams (1874-1958). From the dustjacket: How a murder was done may sometimes present as great a problem as who did it. The young Michelmores were an unconventional family: Garnet, the eldest, a zealous curate; Jasper, an unorthodox artist; Emerald, an ambitious writer; Pearl, the youngest, wooed by a young doctor and also by a fascinating man already married. George, the father of the four, abroad to recuperate after a long illness, suddenly announced his impending return with a second, entirely unknown wife. The “welcome home” barely concealed the consternation and resentment he occasioned. Roger Bennion chanced to take the next door house for the summer. He and his wife became friendly with their neighbors but were soon aware of tension and hidden secrets. And when murder was done, Roger found himself still more closely involved in the Michelmores’ affairs.

28. Death of a Viewer (1958)
The story takes place, where else, in a stately manner owned by an elderly former labor union official who married wealth. His son, an MP (member of parliament)has induced his father to open the family’s mansion to a group of Labor Party officials and some others so that he can persuade them that his vision for the future of Labor was sound and that he, naturally, should be seen as the potential leader of that New Labor Party. Among the guests invited a day earlier than the much larger number due to come the next day is the scion of a wealthy philanthropist, whom we learn, is an amateur detective as well, a married couple who, having spent their wealth on fun and games, are now down and out, and looking to create a situation for the MP which would induce him to part with some of his family’s lucre so as to avoid a scandal, and the MP’s Live-in girlfriend as well as the girl he hopes will be her replacement.
