Rob Zombie, best known for his outlandish and unique style of music, has once again outdone himself with the creation of his new horror based comic entitled Spook Show International. For years Zombie was the frontman of the alt rock group White Zombie that served as a solid showcase for his music, artwork and extraordinary style of artistic expression. As of late he has branched out with solo projects, films and short stories all of which seemed to lead up to the inevitable – the creation of a specialized comic that could be viewed by some as nothing more than a platform to pimp out his other projects. When I first saw the cover for Spook Show International I was impressed with the artwork, themes of maniacs, murderers and monsters and three little words “mature readers only. Usually such a lead in would mean you would be left with your jaw dragging on the floor, in complete awe and begging for more. Sadly, there are a few flaws with the premier issue [October 2003] but I am hoping that other issues will take the base concept and build upon it – but that much remains to be seen.

If you are the least bit familiar with White Zombie’s music and Rob’s colorful cast of characters there’s a good chance that this monthly comic will appeal to you on some level. The stories are written by Rob and inked by variety of talented artists, unfortunately, Rob provides none of the artwork you see on the pages. Before I picked up the premiere issue I was under the impression that this was a 100% Rob Zombie production and what we’d be seeing on the pages would be the various characters we were exposed to on the White Zombie releases. To some people this might not be a huge factor but to someone who was looking forward to the gore of Rob’s previous ventures, it was a little disappointing to flip through the pages and be bombarded with the unexpected.

The premiere issue is divided into five sections, four of which are stories – each with their own theme and artists. The back section of the comic is pretty heavy with advertisements for other comics as well as Zombie’s other projects – something that I was a little irritated with when I initially scanned through it. If this has a $3.50 price tag and this many adverts – how many will the others have when they are priced at $2.95. I have nothing against self-promotion but when flipping through a comic book is as tedious as reading an issue of Cosmo, something just doesn’t add up. There was a small announcement about this comic but nothing major so a lot of people didn’t know until the last minute that this was coming to light. Could it be that the flaws we see in the premiere issue are a result of this being rushing through production? Who can say for sure. All I know is that I expected a little higher level of artwork and story lines and I am hoping that the next few issues will be an improvement over this one. My advice to Rob and crew is this – switch to a bi-monthly publication and work out the kinks in the stories and text flow.
