In an age of sail and cannon, where airships ply the skies instead of oceans, the Barbarian Kingdoms of Madraus and the Alliance forged to oppose them have entered full-scale war. The Alliance has turned back the initial assault on the city of Oxathres and bogged down the Madrausan forces into a siege, but elsewhere, the enemy ground forces have broken through the border forts and made significant inroads up the Caldean isthmus. Feeling like a mistake that is being swept aside, Esther is sent to the edge of the known world to complete an all but impossible task. She has done the impossible before, however, and she has never turned away from what she perceives as her duty. As she buries her dead and prepares to bring new life into the world, her enemies need beware, for when they took her innocence, they unleashed an indominable force upon the world and a tempest is growing within her, gathering force like the charge of electricity before the lightning strike.
