RiftWorlds Online series by Brian D Howard (#1-2)

Overview: In my day job, I process paperwork at a cubicle in Corporate America. By night I make up stories I hope people like enough to buy. I’m driven by “what if” questions, and often those lead to story or book ideas. I’ve lived in a motorhome traveling the country, and oh, there are some stories I could tell. I was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and I’m happily living in Denver, CO now, with no intention of moving anywhere else. Writing has been a passion for most of my life. I’ve had to set it aside in the past, but so many circumstances have changed, and now I can focus on it more and more. Someday I’ll make my living doing this.

1. Space Opera Insertion
In 2028 RiftWorlds Online is the most popular virtual reality MMORPG game ever. A week after its release, millions are playing in a game that spans seven unique universes. But now people can’t log out. And when they die in the game, they die in real life.
In prison for manipulating real-world currency through VR-MMORPGs, gamer Rick Danburg just wants to serve out his sentence in peace. But the President’s daughter is trapped in the game. Secret Service agents drag Rick before the President who offers him a deal: a full pardon for finding her and keeping her alive until people on the outside get RiftWorlds back under control. That will be much harder than he is prepared for.
2. Raiding Fantasy
Max is Back. And he’s in so much more trouble than he expected.
Rescue missions are never simple. Gamer Rick Danberg went into RiftWorlds Online, an MMORPG game that scans users’ subconscious minds, to become cyborg Max McAlloy, to locate and protect the president’s daughter, trapped inside. But finding her, an elf cleric named Silleste, and rescuing her from a four-armed space pirate, was only the beginning. He still has to keep her safe until they can log out.
They escaped to the game’s Fantasy World and Max just wanted to wait things out. But why are Inquisitors, space marine paladins in powered armor, rounding people up in a Fantasy World?
In a system designed to fill players’ subconscious wishes, that goes for the evil, cruel, and insane as well.
Try as our heroes might to avoid trouble, trapped where death is permanent, it’s hunt down clues or be hunted. With Ghosts and wraiths, giants and necromancers to deal with, they’ll need more than just a group helping them.
This is going to be epic.
