3. Mr. Standfast
The title refers to a character in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, to which there are many other references in the novel; Hannay uses a copy of Pilgrim’s Progress to decipher coded messages from his contacts, and letters from his friend Peter Pienaar. During the later years of the First World War Brigadier-General Hannay is recalled from active service on the Western Front to undertake a secret mission hunting for a dangerous German agent at large in Britain. Hannay is required to work undercover disguised as a pacifist, roaming the country incognito to investigate a German spy and his agents, and then heads to the Swiss Alps to save Europe from being overwhelmed by the German army.

4. The Three Hostages
It is some time after the First World War, and spy-catcher Richard Hannay is now married to his sweetheart Mary Lamington and living peacefully in the Cotswolds. When the kidnapping of three young children interrupts his quiet, rural life, Hannay finds himself on the trail of Dominick Medina, a cultivated and academic con man who charms everyone he meets. With a few lines of verse and the help of his friend, Dr. Tom Greenslade, Hannay must catch Medina and reveal the villain’s involvement in an international plot to corrupt young minds using hypnotism and blackmail.

5. The Island of Sheep
Now in his fifties, Richard Hannay is called upon to fulfill an old promise. Haraldsen, an acquaintance from Hannay’s days as a British spy, is dying, and demands that Hannay protect his son, Valdemar, who is about to inherit the secret to a great treasure. But enemies from Hannay’s past, including the infamous D’Ingraville, want in on the prize and will stop at nothing to get their hands on Valdemar. With the help of his old allies and teenage son, Peter John, can Hannay keep Valdemar, and the secret treasure, safe?
