Rescue Tails: The Ultimate Guide to Welcoming Your Rescue Dog by Teresa Tyler
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 521 KB
Overview: ‘Rescue dog’ is an increasingly common term for many peoples’ dogs these days. When you ask about someone’s dog, they may well reply ‘oh she’s a rescue’. The term defines many aspects about dogs; from where they came from to the reason for some types of more difficult behaviours.
Rescuing dogs seems to be a more socially acceptable form of acquiring dogs. We all know that shelters are bursting at the seams and that to save a dog from a shelter is a good thing to do. Some people are quite anti breeders, claiming that they add to this overburdening of rescue organisations and to the over-population of dogs throughout the world. Whatever reason we decide to rescue a dog, whether it be from a local shelter or from abroad, these dogs often arrive with little past history, a handful of issues and can be challenging. However, human desire is such that we want to make our rescue dogs lives as fulfilling and as happy as possible, to make their new furever home the opposite of where they have come from and to witness the magical transformation of a dog living on the streets to a dog being loved in a home.
This book was created as a guide for those who are beginning this journey, one that I have travelled countless times and has led me along a career path spanning over thirty years by rehabilitating dogs from parts of Europe. It is a complex journey, one that will cost you both financially and emotionally. Rescue dogs are sometimes the most difficult to share your life with, yet they are the best teachers, and the results are often the most rewarding experiences you can have with dogs. In the following pages, we shall explore this journey, trying to see things from the dog’s perspective as much as it is possible for humans to do. By trying to ‘think more dog’, we can begin to understand what the process of change is like for dogs and gain insight into their body language, communication and emotions. Once we understand this, we can begin to work with them to create a trusting and fulfilling relationship.
By reading and using the information within the following pages, I hope readers will begin to build on their knowledge and awareness of dogs, whilst at the same time, enhancing your dog’s experience of their world. I explain aspects of dog behaviour, provide practical tips and give you insights into building resilience and trust, without which the human/dog relationship cannot flourish.
