Receptions of War: Vietnam in American Culture by Andrew Martin
Requirements: .ePUB, .PDF reader, 2.8 Mb
Overview: THE above epigraph, with its by-now-familiar message of pain, loss, and regret, initially entered American culture by means of television. It now lingers on in my life in two modes of representation: text and video. The text, which sits on my desk as I type these words, is a transcript from the CBS television news program 60 Minutes; the segment from which the quotation comes is called “The Enemy.” The video cassette is at home somewhere among the piles of video cassettes that have tended to grow in proportion to the length of time it has taken me to write this book. There are other piles, too: popular magazines, academic journals, novels, memoirs, histories, collections of photojournalism, comics, as well as files full of clippings and notes. All of this represents but a fraction of what American culture is doing with and to a war it would rather forget or remember differently, if only it could.
