Reading Relics
Dr. Miles Cole is a professor of Archaeology at a prestigious university, and out of a small pool of archaeologists with expertise in the Carribbean islands. One evening, two guests arrive at his door. His star student, a transfer student finishing her last two semesters at his university, Alexandria Rizzo, and CIA representative Mr. Johnson, to inform Dr. Miles Cole that he’s been selected for work on a top-secret mission. The U.S. government has recently learned that the Cuban Missile Crisis was a cover-up. The Soviets knew they couldn’t get the equipment that they needed into and out of Cuba without American curiosity, and military, getting in the way. The missiles were a distraction, a diversion, so Soviet archaeologists could excavate and relocate ancient technology. Mr. Johnson, and the people he answers to at the CIA, want to know exactly what was so important, that the Soviet Union would risk global war to get it.
Dr. Miles Cole and Ms. Alexandria Rizzo fly to Cuba to begin their investigation just two days later. Upon arrival, they are escorted to a hotel where they are provided with a more in-depth briefing of the site. The site was really more of a pit. It appeared that the Soviets removed something, leaving behind a spherical pit, 14 meters deep, and 18 meters across. Curiously, the depth and diameter were about the only measurements they had, as no one has been able to record any data from the site, with GPS systems failing, cell phones freezing, and even thermometers giving readings that made no sense. Eager to begin work, the two assess the site that night and after a short inspection, Dr. Cole’s keen eyes observe an archaeological feature in the ground, leading to the discovery of a curious device. The technology the Soviets were after was right there, beneath whatever structure the Soviets had removed. While attempting to call Mr. Johnson and inform him, the phone dies, the street goes black, and the rest of the world loses power.

Dr. Miles Cole and Alexandria Rizzo find themselves deep in a cave on Cuba’s coast. The obelisk they found at the dig site earlier is illuminating the cave, revealing to the duo that they are actually in a man-made structure, an ancient temple. They float through the temple channel into a circular room with several openings leading to new hallways with inscriptions on the ceiling. Alexandria uses her background in cryptology to try to decipher which opening they should explore. Once they make their choice and are inside the selected hallway, the water picks up speed enough speed to make turning back impossible, and forces Alexandria to make split decisions at forks in the channel. In a rush, Alexandria makes a wrong choice, leading them down a path of rushing water, gathering more and more speed. The two, realizing the danger, attempt to turn the boat around, tipping themselves over in the process, and losing the boat to the current. Wet, and missing half of their gear, they fight, swimming against the rushing water by grabbing along the walls of the temple, back to the previous hallway. Once on the correct path again, it isn’t long until they reach the center of the temple. There, they catch their breath, and the recent near death experience ignites a discussion about death, the afterlife, and the Kingdom of Heaven.
The center reveals dozens more of the strange obelisks, and a variety of machines. After some inspection, it becomes clear that the obelisks are actually energy cells that power the machines; the holes act as teeth on a key. Among the ruins, they also find diagrams and blueprints of the ancient civilization’s technology in a library of sorts. After experimenting with several machines, Dr. Cole discovers a platform with an opening for a power cell and inserts the one found at the dig site. Upon activation, the platform begins moving along the top of the water. He and Alexandria are able to use the platform to exit the cave. When they can hear the sound of the ocean outside, the platform stops and begins to make its way back from where it came. The two exit the platform and wade slowly back through the shallow water along the mangrove forest. Alexandria makes Dr. Cole promise to reimburse the hotel for the boat. Once back at the car, Alexandria and Miles are shocked to find Mr. Johnson and Mr. Rodriguez waiting for them.

Unlikely Assets. Alexandria Rizzo pulled Dr. Miles Cole from the slab boat. It must have been close to noon now. The world was alive with sunlight, which would last for several hours before the people would be engulfed in darkness again.
