Radical Feminism by Anne Koedt, Ellen Levine, Anita Rapone
Requirements: .PDF reader, 102mb
Overview: A fine anthology of feminist writings collected by the publicist doyennes of the Women’s Movement, most of which seem to be reprinted from the various Notes (of the Second and Third Years), with a predictable emphasis on the Radical Feminists (group — not description), though some selections are from Radicalesbians, OWL, and apocalyptic fringe sectors such as BITCH. The offerings go from capsule history to the 19th-century movement (then, as now, there were warring reform and radical elements within the movement) to personal grievance testimony (getting angry at men, black experience, lesbianism) to more theoretical and analytical discussions (everything from the vaginal-clitoral orgasm controversy to psychiatric put-downs) to the mechanics of politicization (formation of women’s groups, various manifestos). The pieces move in the same way a consciousness-raising group does — from articulated rage/hurt to feelings of sisterhood to an understanding of oppression to the final stage of activism. Even the rather parochial sections on divisions within the Movement (Radical Feminists versus Radicalesbians versus reformist NOW or chauvinist gay movements) are of interest in delineating the nuances of political stance. The book which includes movement stars as well as lesser lights will be invaluable to uninformed men and women, and a kind of convenient bible to feminists probably familiar with most of the ideas if not the articles themselves.
