Overview: An alternate history novel of the Korean War as seen through the eyes of an American Embassy officer and a young Korean woman. Following the North Korean attack on South Korea in June 1950, Soon Hi Chung and her family join hordes of refugees fleeing south away from the fighting. Although President Truman orders American troops into Korea to save the beleaguered South Korean regime, he elects to withdraw American forces when he is confronted with a Soviet challenge that raises the likelihood of a new world war. With the Americans gone, North Korea takes over the entire peninsula and Soon Hi, separated from members of her family, is evacuated to Japan. There she yearns to reunite with family members and return to her homeland, but realizes it may be an impossible dream.
