Pirates On The Mississippi by June Swordsmith

Overview: In the 1840s there was a lot of activity in the small town of Helena (Arkansas) on the banks of the Mississippi River. Farmers, hunters, trappers and traders come together there, as well as many boatmen. Although steamships are already operating, a large proportion of the goods are still transported downstream by flat boats. Driving with such a cumbersome box that only drives with the current can bring good profit, but is also very dangerous on the still unregulated rivers. Many flat boats crash, often they even disappear completely without a trace. However, no one suspects that a significant part of the alleged accidents are caused by a gang of criminals, which has settled a few miles below Helena on island number 61. From the outside, this island seems overgrown and inaccessible, but the tangle of fallen trees is artificially arranged and hides a small but well-fortified settlement, the headquarters of the pirates. In addition, the gang has helpers along the entire river system, sometimes in very inconspicuous bourgeois existences, even police officers and prosecutors are among them. Lootable prey is already being scouted in the upper reaches of the rivers. Then gang members can be hired as pilots or rowers and ensure that the boats strand on the island at night and in fog, where they are looted and the crews murdered. The bandit Sander, who is as smart as he is sophisticated, plays a special role. In changing identities, he steals from the victim as a swindler and heir-stealer when the opportunity arises.
