Maxwell’s Inspection (Peter Maxwell #9):

There comes a time in every teacher s life when he must face his Nemesis – the four-yearly Ofsted Inspection. The team arrives at Leighford High one glorious summer and proceeds to stick its collective nose into various classrooms. The immediate problem of Head of Sixth Form, Peter Maxwell, is the attractive and vivacious Sally Meninger, a Humanities expert who proceeds to cast aspersions on Maxwell s metier as a teacher. Out on the town one night to relieve the tension, the Head of Sixth Form finds her in an intimate situation with her fellow Inspector, Alan Whiting. On the third day, with the atmosphere at the High School decidedly fraught, Whiting is found stabbed to death in the office set aside for the Inspection team. The police are called in and Maxwell cannot help but notice that Sally is not as distraught at Whiting s death as might be expected. It emerges that her private life is somewhat irregular – a view reinforced when Maxwell catches her in flagrante with his Headmaster, James Diamond. Events move quickly and Diamond is arrested on suspicion of the murder of WhitingBut is it that simple? Aided by his inside informant, lover DS Jacquie Carpenter, Maxwell sets out to prove that his colleague is innocent. And the only way to do it is to take on the Inspectors one by one…

Maxwell’s Grave (Peter Maxwell #10):

Peter `Mad Max’ Maxwell is an educational dinosaur. He has been teaching history since Jane Marple was a twinkle in Margaret Rutherford’s eye. With his cat, Count Metternich, for company, and the love of his life DC Jacquie Carpenter, as the woman in the case, Maxwell has a habit of stumbling on murder.
But whether you’re a kid about to split an infinitive or a murderer trying to hide a corpse… beware of `Mad Max’ Maxwell; he’ll get you in the end.

Maxwell’s Mask (Peter Maxwell #11):

One of Leighford High School’s ‘characters’, Deena Harrison had a habit of causing trouble. But when she returns to her school years later to help out in the drama department, the cast suddenly starts to drop dead. Are the seemingly tragic coincidences more sinister than they appear? ‘Mad Max’ will soon find out.

Maxwell’s Point (Peter Maxwell #12):

With girlfriend DS Jacquie Carpenter back at work and little baby Nolan rapidly growing into a feisty toddler, Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell, Head of Sixth Form at Leighford High, decides to hire an au pair. The exotic Juanita Reyes seems the perfect choice.
But one afternoon the lovely Juanita disappears into thin air, and two ramblers are surprised – and not a little disturbed – when their dog digs up a body on Dead Man’s Point, the lonely cliff top rising high over the sea. No stranger to murder inquiries, Mad Max soon sets about sniffing out the killer. But with a missing au pair, a creepy gardener, troublesome teenagers and reports of a randy rambler to investigate – not to mention a young baby to look after – has Max taken on more than he can handle this time?
Another hilarious outing for the super sleuth Head of Sixth Form; you’d have to be a fool to miss Maxwell’s Point.

Maxwell’s Chain (Peter Maxwell #13):

Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell is a very busy man; resisting Ofsted imperatives and marking GCSE coursework on time, as well as cramming as much History as possible into the reluctant heads of Nine Eff Gee. And at home, baby Nolan claims a lot of attention, as does Nolan’s rather surprising friend and protector, the black and white mouse-tormentor Metternich the cat.
Despite this, Max still finds time for some amateur sleuthing when the terminally nervous school photographer asks for his help after accidentally photographing a murder on the beach. Their discovery of a body buried in the sand dunes sets in motion a chain of events that only the redoubtable Mad Max can break, but one thing is certain: life in Leighford will never be the same again.

Maxwell’s Revenge (Peter Maxwell #14):

With the beginning of a new school year under way, Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell prepares to get stuck into his curricular routine and is looking forward to his forthcoming wedding to fiancée DS Jacquie Carpenter. The immediate task in hand for senior staff members is the hiring of a new Assistant Headteacher, for which the school caterers have prepared a private buffet. But during the lunch meeting disaster strikes, as guests and staff alike become seriously ill in a matter of minutes.
After being reluctantly thrust into the role of Acting Headmaster, Maxwell works in conjunction with the police, including his lovely Jacquie, to try to unravel the mystery. But with certain fingers pointing at him, and Jacquie worried that the attack has infiltrated his life in a way that could soon get out of control, is Maxwell in more danger than he thinks?

Maxwell’s Retirement (Peter Maxwell #15):

Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell, the ‘dinosaur’ Head of Sixth Form at Leighford High, just cannot get to grips with technology, and doesn’t see the need to know how to send a text or an email when a simple note or phone call will suffice. However, it soon becomes vital that he learns when some of his female pupils begin to receive strange and threatening messages, with the anonymous sender claiming to know intimate details about the girls’ personal lives. Max starts to receive messages too, and then two of the girls go missing. When a body is found it seems that the prank has taken a sinister turn, and Mad Max may well be the next target. Is the chance of him reaching retirement looking more unlikely by the day?

Maxwell’s Island (Peter Maxwell #16):

Having had his retirement snatched from him by malfunctioning technology, Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell finds himself facing yet another new year at Leighford High School. His wife Jacquie, her hopes of a dedicated house husband dashed, is further annoyed when a family holiday turns into an impromptu Year Seven school trip. And the situation takes another turn for the worse when someone goes missing, forcing Jacquie to play the role of woman policeman.
As the investigation escalates and a dead body is discovered, Maxwell, researching with paper and pencil, stumbles by accident on the linchpin to the whole case. He knows the reason – all he has to find is the murderer. With the answer lying in a missing piece of paper, divorces and deceit, will Maxwell survive to apply for retirement again?

Maxwell’s Crossing (Peter Maxwell #17):

At Leighford High, the ever-resourceful Peter ‘Mad Max’ Maxwell is temporarily promoted to Head of History when his colleague Paul Moss is chosen for an American exchange and heads off to Los Angeles. Paul’s counterpart is Hector Gold, who is accompanied to Leighford by his eccentric family including his wife Camille and her parents, Jeff and Alana O’Malley.
Clearly Jeff O’Malley is quite a character – with money to burn he has been gate-crashing the local poker school, much to the dismay of its members. When events take a sinister turn and Sarah Gregson, one of the poker school’s members, is found murdered, newly-promoted Inspector Jacquie Carpenter Maxwell and Henry Hall investigate, with the assistance of Maxwell.

Maxwell’s Return (Peter Maxwell #18):

MAXWELL’S BACK, AS MURDER COMES TO SLEEPY LEIGHFORD. Are the two things connected? Well, yes and no. Teenage girls are being picked up on the seafront and two of them are found dead. DI Jacquie Carpenter-Maxwell has barely set foot on her old patch before she is up to her jet-lagged neck in somebody else’s tragedy.
The prime suspect is Bernard Ryan, Deputy Head at Leighford High, and Mad Max is soon riding to the rescue on White Surrey. But can he pedal fast enough before another girl meets the wrong man, at the wrong time, in the wrong place?
