Overview: Mirjam en Sandra Ploeg zijn op weg om een tweedehands kastje op te halen als ze horen dat er een vliegtuig is neergestort. Een paar uur eerder hebben ze op Schiphol afscheid genomen van hun ouders, broer en pleegbroertje. Ineens beheerst MH17 hun doodgewone Nederlandse leventje. Er is geen ruimte meer om kind te zijn, er is ook niemand meer om kind van te zijn.
Mirjam en Sandra worden geconfronteerd met een onpeilbaar verdriet, maar tegelijk moeten ze van alles: naar de supermarkt waar iedereen hen aanstaart, naar nabestaandenbijeenkomsten, de amfibieën van hun vader verzorgen, pijnlijke gesprekken voeren met familierechercheurs en duizenden goedbedoelde berichten beantwoorden.
Desondanks slagen de zusjes Ploeg erin zich terug te vechten – zij aan zij. Hun positieve kijk op de toekomst ontketent soms merkwaardige, zelfs botte reacties.
Met een fijnzinnig psychologisch inzicht en een sterk gevoel voor detail tekent Els Quaegebeur hun verhalen op. Daarin komt de familie die er was voor 17 juli 2014 tot leven en vertellen Mirjam en Sandra hoe ze de draad weer hebben opgepakt.
Naast andere nabestaanden van de MH17-slachtoffers spreken Els en de zusjes ook met Jos de Keijser, de psycholoog die de rouw van mh17- nabestaanden onderzocht, en met de Amerikaanse filmmaakster Rachel Mercy Simpson. Zij had de leeftijd van Mirjam en Sandra toen in 1988 haar vader omkwam in de aanslag op Pan Am-vlucht 103 boven de
Schotse plaats Lockerbie.
Zoals vogels vliegen laat zien dat verdriet om dierbaren vele gezichten kent, dat je niet goed of fout kunt rouwen en dat het een proces is waar je als buitenstaander vooral niet teveel van moet vinden, ook niet als een drama zich afspeelt op het nationale toneel.
