Nuclear Winter series (2-3) by Nathan Jones

Overview: My name is Nathan Jones. I’ve been a longtime reader of post-apocalyptic fiction and like to explore various scenarios in which disasters could occur. One interest has been observing just how fragile our modern life is, and how little it would take to send us back to a low tech existence that people in general no longer possess the knowledge or skills to survive in.
Genre: Fiction > Sci-Fi/Fantasy
2. First Spring:
Nuclear winter has begun. The people of Aspen Hill can expect more than half a year of snows, and bitter temperatures like nothing they’ve seen before. The winter after the Gulf of Mexico burned was brutal for the unprepared town, and while they’d been strengthened by their experiences they faced even worse now.
As Mayor, Matt Larson must lead the town through this difficult time, while facing the joys and challenges of being a new father. Trev Smith continues to lead the town’s defenses, even as he looks forward to spending his life with Deb. Lewis Halsson, struggling to overcome his grief, focuses hard on his reloading business and the future he’s trying to build for his family.
If they can make it through the winter, that’s only the beginning since they must scramble to grow, forage, and hunt for the food they need. Summer will be all too short, and who knows how many nuclear winters they’ll face before things get back to normal. And while the Gold Bloc forces were defeated and have retreated from Utah, they continue their raids and prove a constant threat. The town’s future looks hopeful, but their challenges are by no means over.
3. Chain Breakers:
Aspen Hill has finally stabilized, after almost two years of chaos since the Gulf burned. The conflict and turmoil have ended, and the people living there are finally in a position where they’re confident they can feed themselves, not just through the next nuclear winter but long term. Nestled in its little valley in the Rocky Mountains the town looks forward to the future.
But not everywhere is so fortunate. Halfway across the country, along the Mississippi River that now forms a border between the Central Controlled Zone and Canada, Pete Childress and his unit remain locked in conflict with the remnants of the Gold Bloc countries that invaded the United States. Galvanized by the CCZ’s raids on the convoys the US and Canada sent to Mexico’s trade summit, the two countries have begun striking back. But rather than launching major attacks against the enemy nation, the combined force has begun using the CCZ’s own tactics against them, sending raiding parties across the border to hit enemy camps, free US and Canadian citizens taken as slaves, and punish those who enslaved them.
Pete’s unit forms the spearhead in the conflict, operating where the fighting is fiercest. And while Pete’s matured some in the year since he ran away from home to join the Army, he remains hotheaded and eager to bring the fight to the enemy. From the looks of things there’ll be plenty of fight to bring.
