Not With A Whimper Series (1-4) by D.A. Boulter
Requirements: ePUB / MOBI Reader, 3.2MB
Overview: Since my early school days, Science Fiction and Fantasy have intrigued me, starting with Heinlein, whose Starship Troopers I read in the middle 60s, long before I knew about the social and political themes it carried. My seminal year, though, came in 1974 when I got my hands on a copy of Frank Herbert’s "Dune", which fascinated me with its depth and breadth. At that moment I knew SF&F had hooked me.

However, it took another ten years before I seriously considered writing my own material and another ten after that before I began writing in earnest. Now, with the advent of e-readers, I find myself in the very strange position of being a published author, rather than someone who wrote for himself only. It gratifies me that many have read and enjoyed my works. Thank you.

I’ve worked as a cook, a first-aid attendant, weather observer, radar operator and tech. I’ve worked in the city, in the woods, and in the Arctic. Just now, I find myself on the West Coast of Canada, with my feline companion — one of a line of cats who have shared my writing moments (and interrupted them as well).

#1 – Producers
The clock is ticking. Though Larry Clement doesn’t know it, he has only 100 days to realize his dream before all hell breaks loose.

Larry has set his sights on the stars, wants to go to space as soon as he turns 19 and can legally escape his father’s dominion over him. He will do anything to thwart his father’s desire to keep him on the low-tech farm, while others around him go to university, or get city jobs.

With the help of Sandra, his long-time girlfriend and classmate, Larry has covertly engaged in taking tech modules, which will help him achieve his dream. And, if they don’t do the trick, there’s always The Lottery. A winning ticket would see him on his way to the stars before his father could even raise a finger.

One way or another, he will not live out his life — however long or short — as a farmer.

#2 – Destroyers
One man’s "duty" is another man’s "mutiny". Major Karl Müller of the European Treaty Organization (ETO) walks a fine line as his squadron of shuttle-fighters prepares to meet any enemy in Earth’s Last Battle. His orders are to commit what many would consider a war crime — an attack on a helpless civilian space station. If they have to face the powerful United States of North America, chances are most of the squadron will not survive long enough to launch from their Azores base — in which case the question become moot. But Müller can’t count on death giving him the easy way out.

On the other side of the Atlantic, USNA Sergeant Frank Jensen views the near future with equal desperation. He and 39 fellow "volunteers" have failed Colonel Westorn’s brainwashing course, and if the Colonel cannot successfully finish their indoctrination, he intends to finish them in another way. Jensen believes his group’s only chance is to escape to one of the colony worlds, where Westorn won’t be able to find them. That spells desertion, but his duty to himself and his comrades drives him forward. However, he sees no chance of them getting into space without help, and dying here on Earth appears the only alternative. He knows his people won’t go down easily, but wonders what use Colonel Westorn has for soldier-fanatics.

Throw scientist Christine Burnett, aghast at what the perversion of her sleep-learning program has done, and the powerful Yrden Family into the mix, and you know that the world will end not with a whimper, but a bang.

#3 – Preservers
It’s about to start. War. Probably Earth’s last one. I need to find someone to become Keepers of the Knowledge.”

With Professor Preston’s words ringing in his ears, Johannes Yrden knows he has little time. His mission: rescue the 57 researchers who carry with them the accumulated knowledge of mankind from under the noses of hostile Earth governments. Problem? They are scattered over the globe, and many of them want to bring their families as well, while others in the Family Trading League compete for the shuttles he needs.

Lose this battle, and the FTL will cease to exist, with the Families reduced to a planetary existence on colony worlds thrown back to the dark ages. To win, Johannes must work with an antagonistic rival, put his failing marriage to the ultimate test, and possibly lose his son to the machinations of a beautiful member of the greatest, most ruthless enemy the Yrdens have ever faced.

#4 – Survivors
The last days of Planet Earth

When pirates hit his ship, Pilot Wen Carson survives, only to be rescued by the person he hates most in the entire galaxy: Jaswinder Yrden. Stuck on an Yrden ship, having lost everything and everyone he loved, Wen wants to do nothing more than just give up. But if he gives in to his loss and despair, a double-dozen planets will suffer.

Jaswinder has her own problems. The renowned physicist must do the impossible – boost the incomplete space station, Haida Gwaii, into hyperspace before enemies of the Families can destroy it.

Should she fail, the Family Trading League, Yrdens included, will crumble; the colonies of Earth will find themselves thrown back to the dark ages; and the responsibility for thousands of deaths will lie on her shoulders.

It will take both of them to save Earth’s colonies and Haida Gwaii from disaster, to allow humanity to survive with hope and dignity.
