The Coalition’s Space Corps offer the freedom to escape the crime-ridden and poisonous slums and to access technology that the Inner Colonies don’t share with the rest of the galaxy, but those perks come at a cost. The galaxy’s at war, and many troopers will die before their contract’s up. They may perish in battle, catch an incurable disease, or end up being butchered by one of the Coalition’s enemies. Colton doesn’t fear offworld threats, not if the alternative is to stay at home.
But training to become a trooper is chaotic, dangerous, and potentially fatal, especially if he ends up at the hands of a ruthless and unpredictable sergeant who seems intent on getting his platoon killed. Colton will go as far as it takes to make it through basic training, but past feuds from the slums never die. His enemies will try their best to enact their revenge on him.
The Coalition’s wars against pirates, smugglers and disease-ridden humans suddenly seem much less important than all the threats that a recruit faces. Colton can’t forget about the Coalition’s enemies, though, because they’re much closer than he thinks.
