Overview: I write the series of murder mysteries featuring Nicole Tang Noonan, an art historian from San Francisco, who gets her first teaching job at a small college in rural Ohio. My own life has gone in the opposite direction: I grew up in Ohio and wound up in San Francisco, where I am a member of the writing community at The Mechanics Institute Library. I also belong to the Northern California chapter of Sisters in Crime and am a Guppy. Prior to taking up the craft of crime fiction, I performed as an actor and guitarist. In San Francisco, I worked with several companies that produce new plays. In Philadelphia, I performed with the Hedgerow Theater, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, and the Arden Theater. I spent most of my thirty-year academic career at Rider University, teaching classes in acting and theater history, directing plays, and publishing scholarly articles. Among other things, I discovered that the now universally recognized character, Dracula, was more the creation of Hollywood screenwriter John Balderston than anyone else. I also taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara; The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee; and Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. I earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Notre Dame and MA and PhD degrees in theater arts from the University of Minnesota. While a graduate student, I reviewed plays for the Minnesota Daily. With my wife, Ann, I enjoy walking everywhere in San Francisco, visiting art museums, and eating from food trucks.

1. Dark Mural
Art history becomes a matter of life and death.

Nicole Tang Noonan, an art historian from San Francisco, gets her first job at a small college in rural Ohio. She hopes to launch an academic career, but when one of her students is murdered, and another is accused of the crime, she needs to find the real killer.

As her investigation brings her closer to identifying the murderer, and her study of a mural awakens the past, colleagues shun her, the local sheriff threatens her, and she wonders if she’ll live long enough to give a midterm exam.

2. Dark Exhibit
Art means different things to different people. Sometimes the difference is deadly.

Nicole Tang Noonan, art historian, hopes to advance her career by curating an exhibit at the small college where she teaches. Her hopes are threatened when a visitor to the opening reception is murdered, and the artist becomes the prime suspect.

Desperate to prove the artist she brought to campus is innocent, Nicole studies the exhibit and becomes convinced the motive is encoded in the paintings on display. She must crack the code and catch the killer before he catches her.

3. Dark Picasso
Is a masterpiece worth killing for?

Art historian Nicole Tang Noonan hopes to raise her profile on campus when she attends a dinner party given by donors to her university. When one of the dinner guests is murdered, the police quickly make an arrest—too quickly, Nicole thinks.

Nicole’s scholarly interest in her host’s art collection, which includes a painting by Picasso, leads her into the high-stakes world of collectible art. Tensions among the dinner guests point to several possible suspects. As Nicole looks into their motives, she must deduce which one is the murderer before the murderer takes an interest in her.

4. Dark Portrait
Who is burning Rococo portraits?

Nicole Tang Noonan spends her research leave at home in San Francisco writing an article on the subject of her dissertation. Her scholarly pursuits are interrupted when she discovers a body while walking in the Presidio, San Francisco’s national park.

When a police detective finds a photocopy of a Rococo portrait in the dead man’s backpack, Nicole’s expertise in art history makes her a suspect. At the same time, Nicole investigates a series of online videos showing Rococo portraits being burned to ashes. Is there a connection to the murder? Can she prove it and exonerate herself?
