The Blooding of the Guns, 1 | On the last day of May 1916, one hundred and fifty British ships, manned by sixty thousand sailors, confronted the German High Sea Fleet of one hundred ships and forty five thousand men in the icy North Sea at the epic battle of Jutland. Young Nicholas Everard distinguishes himself and wins a DSC. This is naval warfare, as close as one can get without actually having been there.

Sixty Minutes for St George, 2 | Nick Everard is executive officer of the destroyer Mackerel, which has spent the winter months of 1917–18 endlessly patrol-ling the Strait of Dover to prevent German ships from reaching the Atlantic. Despite his lack of respect for his captain, Everard achieves successes in action. Then he is summoned for top-secret special duty: to command a raid to capture a German trawler’s crew and bring them back to Dover. The raid is prefatory to the St. George’s Day operation in which, in the space of an hour, the German naval fortifications at Zeebrugge are destroyed. And Everard, at the age of twenty-two, is rewarded with his first destroyer command.

Patrol to the Golden Horn, 3 | Nicholas Everard is ready to run the gauntlet in his most dangerous mission yet…The menacing bulk of the German battlecruiser Goeben lurks in the Golden Horn of Constantinople. It is vital that she is destroyed, and the plan is to send an E-class submarine in through the Dardanelles to sink her unawares.

But it has been two years since an Allied submarine passed through the narrow straits successfully, littered as they are with minefields, nets and depth charges dropped by the gunboats endlessly patrolling above.

Storm Force to Narvik, 4 | British Captain Nick Everard’s destroyer is crippled by Nazi gunfire in the German invasion of Norway. Desperately attempting to repair his ship hidden in a remote fjord, Everard is unaware that his son is part of an Allied naval flotilla converging on Norway, and the two are fated to join forces in a deadly arctic battle.

Last Lift from Crete, 5 | The situation is dire for British forces in the Mediterranean, and Commander Nick Everard and his son Jack find themselves in the midst of chaos. Aboard separate ships, the Everards are part of a flotilla patrolling the Aegean. There they face the terrifying bomber attacks of German Stukas as they struggle to save as many of the evacuating troops as possible. But when the order comes for one last lift from Crete, the decimated flotilla must make a suicide run—and only a miracle can save them!

All the Drowning Seas, 6 | As the Japanese sweep across the Pacific, the Allies make a last-ditch effort to defend Java. Captain Nick Everard, commanding the cruiser Defiant, joins a mixed group of Allied ships to engage a superior Japanese invasion force. Nick is badly wounded and his ship is caught alone in the tightening noose of Japanese dominance. To escape, the battered Defiant must play a cat-and-mouse game with the hunting Japanese among the islands of the Java Sea.

A Share of Honour, 7 | Sub-lieutenant Paul Everard serves aboard the submarine Ultra in the Mediterranean where the Allies keep up their desperate attacks against Axis supply ships. But Paul has other troubles as well: his father, Nick, is somewhere in the Far East where Japanese superiority continues to pound the Allies, and his brother, Jack, now enmeshed in the murky world of clandestine operations, has been sent on a high-risk mission to destroy a key German naval base.

The Torch Bearers, 8 | Nick Everard, aboard the destroyer Harbinger, escorts a slow convoy through dangerous seas—the haunt of the ferocious U-boat packs, and the convoy is too vulnerable to pass up—at least that’s what the Allies hope, for Everard and his ships are bait designed to distract the Germans from the real “Torch” invasion forces.

The Gatecrashers, 9 | Nick Everard and his son Paul return in this final chapter of the Everard saga. Paul commands a state-of-the-art midget submarine, sent to sneak up on the formidable German battleship Tirpitz and lay explosive charges. It’s one step away from a suicide mission, but Paul must try—for if he fails, his father Nick’s escort of an Arctic convoy hardly stands a chance.
