Overview: Takashi Natsume is a boy who’s never fit in because he can see yokai (spirits). Passed around between family members, in high school he ends up living where his grandmother, Reiko Natsume, lived as a girl. There, he learns that she could also see yokai and collected their names in a Book of Friends that allowed her to control them. Natsume now faces returning the yokai names contained in the book or being chased down by yokai who want the book or their names back. This volume is largely episodic, but several recurring characters, including the yokai-trapped-as-a-lucky-cat Nyanko-sensei, draw the reader into the world and create questions about whether or not Natsume will finally make friends. The many varied yokai and delicate artwork will also capture the attention of readers, especially if they like horror or supernatural stories. Reviewer Alexander agrees, stating, "The black-and-white artwork has light lines that will cause readers to look carefully and pay attention to the action and drama of the story. Endnotes and short chapter summaries help them understand it." There are light Japanese horror themes that some readers should be wary of, but otherwise this is a youth-friendly series and a good introduction to Japanese mysticism.
