Dead Man Manor (Footsteps at Night) – 1936
Whilst vacationing in the French Canadian countryside, the master tailor and occasional amateur sleuth H.B. Treadgold is drawn into the mystery of the ominously named, Manoir de Mort Homme – ‘Dead Man Manor’. The house has been abandoned for years, but there have recently been reports of noises and lights within the grounds. Local gossip harps on old legends of the ghosts said to roam the building, but Treadgold is convinced that more prosaic activities are afoot. But a chance to make the acquaintance of the Manor’s new residents only leads to further mysteries – as well as a terrible tragedy which Treadgold is called upon to avenge.
Mr. Treadgold Cuts In (The Curiosity of Mr. Treadgold) – 1937
A collection of ten short stories. Meet Horace Bowl Treadgold, master tailor and talented amateur detective, whose twin vocations lead to his frequent consultation by Scotland Yard whenever a case turns on questions sartorial – not to mention the many private clients who call on him in his Savile Row shop with crime, not clothes, on their mind. In these ten cases, chronicled by his solicitor and friend George Duckett, Treadgold investigates the killing of a popular singer, the Cleremount Abbey horror, the robbery of valuable antiquities, the Pimlico murder and six other affairs of the most dastardly villainy!
Skeleton Out of the Cupboard – 1946
Clarissa Pell is on her first visit to England when a cycling accident forces her to take refuge at a sinister old inn. After a fellow guest is murdered she is taken under the wing of a local family, who invite her to stay at Arkwood, their magnificent stately home. But Clarissa’s brush with intrigue and romance is not over yet – for it soon becomes apparent that the murderer is a resident at Arkwood itself. Fortunately for Clarissa, however, she is not the only guest – for Mr H.B. Treadgold, noted tailor and talented amateur sleuth, is also in residence.
