Overview: “Moon in the River” is a novel by Jim Phelan, an Irish writer, political activist, and tramp who wrote several books on tramp life and prison life. The novel is a highly stylized story of the English peasants and depicts the complete victimization of a county by a murdering, raping, blackmailing lord of 74. The story opens on Midsummer Eve with two naked girls leading a goat to Sulberrow Hill. Only one person witnesses their journey to their mysterious rite – Simon Barton who is either the village idiot or the wisest man in this strange hamlet that dates back to druid days. The book is considered a frank study of human evil.
