After years of dedication to the practice of magic, Ataturk re-established the Abbey of Thelema on the island of Sicily, the same place his great-grandfather had cultified the vulnerable, and began the spell that would eventually open the gates of Hell to release Sathariel and his dark forces on the world and set himself atop the new order.The collision course is set: Ataturk, the world’s most powerful magician, intent on exposing the world to the denizens of Hell and Sean, recently oblivious to even the existence of magic, bound to stop him. The Abramelin spell, the one that breaks down the barrier that keeps the dark forces imprisoned, takes six lunar cycles to perform and Sean has that much time—168 days—to become a powerful enough sorcerer himself to be able to stop Ataturk from completing it.

Along the way, Sean meets Anna, a witch of deceptive power, beauty, and strength who, along with Brokk, accompanies Sean on his journey to becoming adept in the ways of magic. Among her powers is the ability to see past and future and what she sees when she first meets Sean shakes her to her essence.Sean’s education in magic takes him across the world and even beyond it. In the Faerie Kingdom on the Isle of Skye, he spends time with Oberon, King of the Faeries. In Barcelona, he is under the tutelage of Father Ted, a Catholic Kabbalist priest. His next teacher is Jayenda Puri, a Sadhu holyman, who trains Sean in a cave in the Himalayas of Nepal. His final teacher is Ganesha, the elephant-headed/human-bodied deity of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths, who calls Sean to his temple on the island of Bali. As Sean follows that path laid out for him in the company and protection of Anna and Brokk, he is pursued by Choronzon, a powerful demoness summoned by Ataturk from the Abyss and given the body of a young Danish woman to stop Sean from interfering with his plans. Also on Sean’s trail is Victor Neuberg whose soul has been recently released from the tortures of the Abyss and taken up occupancy in the body of Gilles Carbonneau, a French actuary. Condemned to Hell by a Crowley curse, Victor is intent on revenge on Crowley’s progeny. Gilles, interested more in Asian pornography than in retribution, goes along for the ride. Their sometimes clumsy, always incongruous and uncomfortable alliance as they share bodies (both Gilles’ and those of a bevy of Bangkok girls) complicates the chase.But Sean’s journey teaches him much more than how to avoid the kiss of a spawn of Satan, meditate on a hunk of granite, or do magic. Along the way, he finds humility and where he fits in the scheme of the universe. He learns that compassion is the way to a good life. He realizes the imperative of karma. And he discovers true love with the witch of his dreams.
