Their little brother Benton Lee ‘Buddy’ also pines for a sweetheart and hopes to meet one of his own at one of the numerous social gatherings.
Avery Rae Teecham hates being the second youngest of seven annoying sisters. Her stern and protective widowed father, Merchant Teecham, is a well-respected retired Sea Captain who has settled down in one of the most beautiful plantations in the region, Magnolia Manor. Handsome and courteous, known for his generosity, he is endlessly pursued by single ladies hoping to become his second wife.
Casper Venificus is the last surviving member of one of Perriginne County’s founding families. Handsome and wealthy, when he gets wind that the Teechams have taken up residence near the James River plantation community, he prepares for a calamity that has been prophesied for over two hundred years and is anxious to play his part in it.
Against the backdrop of the gracious lifestyle of the old South and the political and social unrest of the impending Civil War, Midnight Magnolias captures all the loyalty, turmoil, lust, and romance of a civilization tempest-tossed by the winds of Fate…
…And a genteel community rife with vampires.
2. War and Lust – The South Shall Rise Again. And Show its FANGS!
Avery has been married off to Benton Lee “Buddy” Randolph, and to her delight her father, wealthy plantation owner Captain Merchant Teecham, has gifted to her and her new husband her longtime childhood playmate (and clandestine lover), slave, Noah, and his mother as a wedding present.
Already 7 months pregnant, Avery happily looks forward to motherhood. It is summer and the intense humidity and stultifying heat is only matched by steady heating up of the enmity between North and South.
When the unthinkable happens on the advent of the baby’s birth, Avery faces staggering consequences.
The War Between the States has begun with the Manassas invasion of 35,000 Union troops, and the subsequent victory of the 20,000 Southern troops over the invaders. The Perriginne County militia is ready to fight. Buddy’s brothers Carlton and Billy Ray join neighbor Court Cranston as Officers, and Buddy is infuriated when his father insists that he stay home to help manage Twin Willows.
Feelings, loyalties and passions run high in a year that will irrevocably change lives –
-and in which Destiny, as always, seems to have the upper hand!
3. Butternuts & Bloods – AMID THE RAVAGES OF WAR, THE RAPTURES OF ROMANCE…
Avery Rae Teecham resigns herself to carrying on despite her husband Benton Lee Randolph running away to fight for the South in the war effort. In the meantime, she finds solace in her clandestine affair with Noah, a family enslaved person and now a powerful vampire, and a new friendship with the young Doctor Orion Hastings, who seems smitten with her.
As supply chains are destroyed, neighbors band together to continue farming and business operations and protect their towns and plantations from raiders.
Dark figures move in the dead of night around those freshly fallen in battle, feeding on their blood.
The Virginia Vampire clans in Perriginne County must tread cautiously when forced to defend their turf. They are sworn not to risk exposure…
But neutrality is not in the nature of vampires!
4. Great Balls of Fire – “As one war ends, another begins.”
The Civil War drew to a close after taking a tremendous toll on the population, particularly in the South, which was in disarray and faced with the daunting task of rebuilding. Carpetbaggers, new taxes, the high cost of lumber and food, and the inevitable economic restructuring after the enslaved people were emancipated proved to be a challenge for the Teechams, particularly Avery Rae and her husband, Benton Lee Randolph.
Crops have been stripped from the fields by armies on both sides. Anything valuable that wasn’t hidden was confiscated.
Most of the wealthy planters that had counted on slave labor for their income have had their homes burned down, become destitute, and moved away.
But many of the remaining Aristocratic Southern population will survive, along with any of their slaves who chose to stay, because not only will their former Masters forage and find food for the humans that live among them to eat…
They can continue to feast on their preferred form of sustenance – BLOOD!
5. Goose Feathers & Gunpowder – ‘Rebel Romance flourishes during Reconstruction’
A fateful and daring trip up north for the Teechams reunites star-crossed lovers Avery and Noah, but Noah is engaged to a fine Bostonian Socialite who is not about to ruin her wedding plans.
By a strange twist of fate, Preston Venificus is in Boston on business and has an unusual proposition for Avery Rae that could place her entire family in danger if she does not agree to comply.
Boston is a bustling city filled with modern wonders yet unseen in the South, which is still under Reconstruction after its crippling defeat in the War Between the States. Many Southerners are ready to move on and look toward the future.
Others, not so much…
Even the Vampire Community is split, and many Rogue Rebel Vampires who sympathized with the South during the War Between the States are not yet ready to move on.
-V is for VAMPIRE…
…and V is also for VENGEANCE!
6. Kissing Cousins – "THE YEAR IS 1877, AND RECONSTRUCTION IS OVER!"
Somehow the Teechams don’t appear to have aged a bit (go figure), and their neighbors are starting to notice, especially since many of the youngest children are practically grown.
The South is more industrialized and cultured than ever because of the War Between the States. Railroads and factories have been built, and cities that had been pillaged and burned return to their former glory in a new age of prosperity.
Noah divides his time between Boston and Virginia as a business owner and also a financial advisor to Captain Merchant Teecham. He and Avery have never allowed anything, much less their respective marriages, to come between them.
Just as Avery finds herself connecting with her husband again, Benton Lee is called to handle some business arrangements in the UK.
Avery finds life idyllic and is unaware of the dangers surrounding both her and her family members. Some menaces continue from old adversaries and other newer threats from ancient evils that have been reawakened. Hard decisions and unforeseen situations will force her to make new choices-
And as for many of the choices she made years ago-there will come a final reckoning!
