Requirements: .ePUB, .PDF reader, 2.21MB | 3.22MB
Overview: On March 8, 1886, Dr. Leo Stanley was born in Buena Vista, Oregon, and after graduating from Stanford served as chief medical officer at San Quentin Prison from 1913 to 1951. His long tenure proved innovative and controversial: He was the first West Coast physician to use spinal anesthesia; he also experimented with reversing the aging process in inmates, performed plastic surgery to “reform” prisoners by improving their self image and offered voluntary sterilization based on his theory that it would reduce recidivism. Dr. Stanley documented the results of his experiments in medical journals and published books entitled “Men At Their Worst” and “My Most Unforgettable Convicts.”
