Overview: Madeline Hunter has been receiving requests from readers to explain the chronological order of her Medieval historical romances. The confusion arises because, from the viewpoint of historical chronology, they have been published out of order. In a few cases they were even written out of order.
The first three books published are linked by time, place and theme, and were presented as a thematic trilogy by her publisher. All three take place in London and all have romances that cross class boundaries. However, those three books actually start two separate series in the more traditional sense.
The chronologies of the series are presented below. It is not at all necessary to read the books in order. Each stands on its own and was written to be read as an independent novel. Also, not all of the characters in each series can be found in every book of that series. I think of the books as "linked".

A Common Lady
For years she had thought he was dead. Yet when Addis de Valence strode into Moira Falkner’s cottage, there was no mistaking the sharp planes of his face, and the scar she herself had helped to heal. The young squire who had once been her hero was now her lord, a hardened man who returned to claim the son she had raised as her own. But Moira couldn’t deny that Addis roused a passion she never thought to feel–and a perilous hope for a future that could never be….
An Uncommon Love
Addis returned from the Crusades to find his lands usurped by his stepbrother, and his country on the brink of rebellion. Determined to reclaim his birthright, Addis could not afford to be distracted by a woman–even one as tempting as Moira. Yet the only living part of his contented past lay in Moira–and his desire for her was more dangerous than his deadly battles with the king’s men. By law, Moira belonged to him…but possessing her heart might be far more difficult.

#2 By Design

But the wealthy freemason would never have guessed that just a few days later, a misunderstanding would land Joan in the town stocks and he would become her unlikely savior. After the grueling ordeal, Rhys tenderly cares for Joan’s bruised body–and her bruised pride. Yet he longs to do much more … to satisfy the fire that sparks between the pair the moment they are alone.
Rhys could not have known that Joan once enjoyed a more privileged life. She’d had no choice but to become an indentured servant, but she is determined to avenge the crimes that ruined her family and destroyed her world. When Rhys meets with her employer to buy pottery—and buys her instead —Joan is furious. She vows to resist falling under the spell of the handsome, imposing Rhys. But she finds that her resolve quickly softens when tempted by Rhys’s powerful charms—and she can only hope to find a way to avoid surrendering to her potent desire….

#3 Stealing Heaven
Marcus of Angelsmore was not at all happy about being betrothed by the king to a woman he’d never laid eyes on. So when the brooding English knight accidently comes across her in a moonlit garden, he was both surprised–and delighted. Intelligent, charming, and beautiful, she was the most captivating woman he’d ever met. But the magic of that enchanted moment is soon shattered by cold reality: Nesta is not the woman he is to marry, but her sister. Of all the women Marcus might desire, none could be more dangerous than the wild and tantalizing Welsh witch with secret ties to both rebellion and king. For Nesta no one could jeopardize her plans more than a man who would know secrets of both her heart…and her body. Yet the course of their lives–and the destinies of their two nations–will be forever altered as they defy everything to surrender to the most daring seduction of all…

#4 By Arrangment
Lady Christiana Fitzwaryn was not opposed to marriage. But she demanded to be married on her own terms, not as punishment for a romantic indiscretion, and especially not to a common merchant. Yet she was in for a shock when she met David de Abyndon. For she was confronted by no ordinary merchant but a man of extraordinary poise and virility. He was unaffected by their difference in social status. And even less affected by her well-thought-out arguments against their upcoming betrothal. Instead, it was Christiana who felt uneasy in the presence of this naturally lordly man behind whose cool blue eyes she sensed the most uncompromising of passions.
David de Abyndon understood Christiana’s dilemma, for he too harbored a secret pain. How could he tell her that there was more to this arrangement than met the eye? How could he tell her about his deal with the king–a deal that meant he had all but bought Christiana sight unseen?
What’s more, now that he had seen this beautiful, spirited woman, how could he convince her that the love she sought was not in the callow knight she had romanticized but in the flesh-and-blood arms of the man who may have bought her body–but in the bargain lost both his heart and soul?

#5 The Protector
The first time he laid eyes on her she had come to his rescue with a sword in her hand. Still Morvan Fitzwaryn had never seen any woman who aroused his interest and his passion more than the unconventional Breton warrior beauty. Anna de Leon took him into her castle and nursed him back to health, little knowing the spark of desire she was feeding with her caring ministrations. It wasn’t long before Morvan had vowed to protect and conquer this unconquerable woman with all the sensual weapons at his disposal.
For her part, Anna de Leon had no interest in men as lovers or husbands. She was used to commanding men in battle. But she suddenly had the strangest feeling that her well-fortified defenses could be breached by this dark-eyed, smolderingly handsome English knight. When her castle is beseiged by an old enemy who claims both her and her lands, Anna finds she has no choice but to accept Morvan’s aid–even if the enemy outside her walls is no match for the ally within, who with every tantalizing kiss and forbidden embrace threatens to make her a prisoner of her own fiery passion.

#6 Lord of A Thousand Nights
Called the Lord of a Thousand Nights, Ian of Guilford was famed as much for his feats in the bedroom as on the battlefield. But Lady Reyna Graham had no idea of this when, disguised as a courtesan, she passed behind enemy lines with a desperate plan to save her people.
Now, sitting in the tent of the dizzyingly handsome warrior who commanded the army outside her gates, the beautiful widow suddenly realized that she had underestimated her foe.
For she found herself in the company of a man whose charms were said to be impossible to resist…and who would show no mercy in laying siege to her heart—and body—with every sensual weapon in his arsenal.
For the sake of her people, she must not give in … and she must somehow turn this legendary lover who never lost his heart into a man who would exchange all his thousand nights for one with her….
