Overview: Edward Frederic Benson was the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury and member of a distinguished and eccentric family. After attending Marlborough and King’s College, Cambridge where he studied classics and archaeology, he worked at the British School of Archaeology in Athens. One of our greatest humorists, he achieved great success at an early age with his first novel, Dodo (1893). He was a prolific author writing over a hundred books: serious novels, ghost stories, plays and biographies. But he is best remembered for his Lucia comedies written between 1920 and 1939 and other comic novels such as Paying Guests and Mrs Ames. He became mayor of Rye, the Sussex town that provided the model for his fictional Tilling, from 1934 to 1937.

#3. Lucia In London
Here is Lucia in one of her most extraordinary adventures: can she conquer her new home of London, and still hold her societal ground over the stately country mansions of Riseholme as well? #5. Trouble for Lucia
Lucia learns to ride a bicycle, and we live through the saga of Blue Birdie (Mrs. Wyse’s dead budgerigar invoked in a seance).Lucia and Georgie renew their acquaintance with the operatic diva Olga Braceley and the composer Cortese, but nobody in Tilling believes her when she claims to have entertained a duchess overnight.
#6. Lucia’s Progress
Arch enemies Mapp and Lucia return in the next instalment of E.F. Benson’s classic series of rural snobbery. Lucia is now a permanent resident of Tilling and continues her way up the social ladder with gusto, making attempts at the Town Council, finance, a platonic marriage and even the cricket club. Though Miss Mapp will not allow her to take control of the town so easily Lucia is up to the challenge as usual. Lucia employs her most dazzling ingenuity and cunning as the pair launches into a fresh storming of lethal civilities.
