Malignant Man by James Wan
Requirements: CBR reader, 25 Mb each
Overview: I’ll admit that I came into this expecting something entirely different. I’ll just throw it right out there ā I judged the book by its cover. I came in thinking it would be some sort of a Witchblade copycat, only without the scantily clad heroine. Boy, am I glad I was proven wrong.

This is an excellent first issue that hits a wide range of emotions and offers a great mixture of action, sci-fi and mystery. Right off the bat I was pulled in by Piotr Kowalski’s powerful visual style. Those first few pages of a cancer-stricken Alan are particularly moving and perfectly capture the depressing and realistic view of the helplessness that engulfs someone who comes face to face with their own mortality. The tone then drastically shifts gears to a bloody, intense, and graphic shootout that doesn’t let up until the very last page. This change up keeps the issue fresh while at the same time proving that there is far more to the title than what I originally thought.
The creative team succeeded in piquing my interest enough that I know I’ll be back for the second issue. Even though the mystery has been successfully set up, I’m a bit worried that whatever comes next will actually turn me off to the series. For now, I remain optimistic. This was one of the best surprises I’ve had in comics all year.
