Overview: The summer of 2017 will see two major landmarks on railways in the south of England, marketed back in the days of steam as the Sunny South. Most prominently, the Swanage branch will be reopened throughout forpublic services to Wareham, bringing to a conclusion a marathon effort which has taken 45 years and left us with one of the world’s finest heritage lines in the Swanage Railway. Secondly, the year also marks the end of steam on the Southern Region. This special publication not only celebrates in detail the monumental success of the Swanage revivalists and the return of steam-hauled passenger trains to the electrified main lines in the south, but also details the vast spectrum of heritage railways big and small in operation today across the southern and south-western counties.
