Overview:Cuba, August 1994, where a shocking event is currently unfolding. For the first time in 35 years, Cubans openly revolt against Castro’s regime and, likewise, the government doesn’t stop anyone from leaving. But this time nobody will pick anyone up. There’s no boat lift as during the Mariel Crisis. Those who want to flee must take to the sea in inner tubes or homemade rafts.
Despite the risks, nineteen year-old Clara has decided to leave. She convinces her husband, Rigo, to join the exodus. Everything is set for the young couple and two companions to leave the following morning from the fishing village of Cojímar, made famous by Ernest Hemingway. That night, however, as Rigo informs his family about the impending departure, another shocking event unfolds.
An unexpected visitor appears to Clara with news that will drastically impact the plans. In stunned disbelief, Clara refuses to accept the revelation. She figures the surreal visitation is only the result of fear over the decision to leave Cuba. But Clara will soon change her mind, accept the stranger’s news and thus begin an odyssey that will forever alter her life. This is the first testament of her story.
