Luther, Erasmus and the Reformation: A Catholic-Protestant Reappraisal by John C. Olin (Ed.)
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 609 kb
Overview: On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the outbreak of the Reformation, a joint conference, sponsored by Union Theological Seminary and Fordham University, brought together scholars of that new era in Western civilization for a general reassessment of its impact on recent scholarship. New light has been shed in this important field on the causes, progress, and significance of the religious revolt and reform of the sixteenth century.

The present volume is an extension of the conference and is published in the hope that it will increase the meeting’s contribution to both historical and ecumenical understanding. The eight essays presented here reflect different attitudes, different insights, and different conclusions. Among the distinguished contributors are: Roland H. Bainton, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History Emeritus, Yale University (“The Problem of Authority in the Age of the Reformation”); Hajo Holborn, Sterling Professor of History, Yale University (“Luther and the Princes”); Margaret Mann Phillips, author of Erasmus and the Northern Renaissance and The Adages of Erasmus (“Some Last Words of Erasmus”); Wilhelm Pauck, Distinguished Professor of Church History, Vanderbilt University (“The ‘Catholic’ Luther”); and Lewis W. Spitz, Professor of History, Stanford University (“Bibliography of Recent Studies of Luther and the Reformation”). In the realization that we can better understand the significance of what is happening now by appreciating more the significance of what happened then, these scholars have engaged in an open dialogue, in a frank exchange and counter-exchange of ideas. This fundamental process of clarification will inevitably lead to a new interpretation of the Reformation and, thereby, to a new appreciation of our Christian heritage, the ultimate basis on which both Protestant and Catholic must stand.
